Thanks to all who helped with my skeg issue a couple weeks ago. My new problem is more severe, I'm afraid. Losing an anchor and learning to never let my wife back the trailer in the water again, pale in comparison. When I tried to power up the motor seemed to slip into 'neutral' and backing off the throttle would allow the prop to pick back up. I was aboard an acquaintances' boat that developed this problem but didn't learn the reason or resolve. Thank you guys for your time and sharing your smarts!

Re: Slipping, as if in neutral, when powering up

1) Prop hub is bad (not a big deal to fix)
2) Engine to drive coupler is bad (very big deal to fix)
3) Obstruction in front of the prop (easy to fix)
4) Internal drive failure (but I doubt it)

to check for a spun prop, put a mark on the hub and the inside of the prop,
power her up (MASH THE GAS) when you feel it go in to neutral back off and check the mark if they dont line up there is your problem.
the hub in the prop is bad.
