Have a question regarding a 1979 Mercury 50 HP electric start.
The motor runs great, but every now and then the very first crank is very slow, followed by normal speed and then fires up.
Is this normal for a 2 stroke ?
I thought it was to do with excess fuel being drawn in to the motor and the starter trying to crank against a full combustion chamber.
I also thought that there may be water in one cylinder which may have corroded the cylinder wall and the piston was trying to push through
this... I would have thought in this case, that the motor would not be running as well as it does if this was the case. How do you check ?
Battery is fully charged, and connections look OK.
I can get 5500 Rpm out of it and it idles perfectly on all 4 cylinders. No steam evident on muffs, which I would have thought would have to occur if water was present.

hello
hahaaha now ya get to easter egg hunt. look for loose or corroded cable ends. just remove and clean and retighten them. you have a voltage loss someplace or it could be dirty starter brushes.
good luck and keep posting

Thanx Rod..
Do you think that if it was water entry (Rusty cylinder) or other internal restriction that the motor would perform as it does ?
I would think it would have to miss or idle badly now and then.
I agree that it maybe between battery and starter because it has also happened while anchored. After a 20 minute run and warmed up. I have a hand tightened isolator on one battery terminal which I loosen to charge and turn off battery. Perhaps I need to screw it down real hard.
http://www.whitworths.com.au/products/84228_lg.jpg
