Speed does seem to vary dramatically, depending on activity.

I see 10-15 seconds-maybe. NEVER minutes.

Re: slow iboats site verry slow

Could be a similar problem I'm having with a different site.

As a test:

Open up a command prompt: Start -> run -> type "cmd" (no quotes) and click ok.

Then type: "ping -n 10 forums.iboats.com" (no quotes) and hit enter.

Do you get any request timed out responses?

Next, type "tracert forums.iboats.com" (no quotes) and hit enter. When it runs, look for any asterisks in the 2nd column.

Let us know what you find from those 2 tests.

Here's a sample of a test I did earlier to a different site.

Firefox and google chrome tend to be faster on iboats if you are willing to try them.

I agree with Bob VT by using Mozilla Firefox. I have both I.E. 7 and Mozilla Firefox and I use Firefox religiously because it is alot faster to me than I.E. 7. I only use I.E. 7 for work related issues since works websites uses Microsoft based services and I can't logon to Firefox using my work user I.D and password and as a back up web browser in case something happens to Firefox. Take care, Bob:)

Re: slow iboats site verry slow

Presently iboats is working on some equipment. I had the "slowness bug" for a few days a couple of weeks ago and it was driving me nuts.... (not that I really don't have far to go :D)

Be patient ;)

I don't disagree about Firefox and Chrome being faster. I use Firefox myself.

But I can't see changing browsers fixing a 5-10 min logon problem. Sure sounds to me like either a network problem (somewhere between his house and iBoats) or something amiss at iBoats. Just trying to help the guy figure out which.

It's always slow for me. Every other site I visit is very fast.

Gotta be the iboats setup.

That's a good move JC1933. It has a built in spell check as well. If you see a red squiggly line under the word, just right klik on it and the correct spelling will come up. Just used it for squiggly. Also you can download a add on called Adblock plus. When you get a popup add you just klik on it and the add won't ever load again. When you get rid of the pesky add's that show up on every page things get even faster. If you get the program called fireTune it can optimize firefox for even more speed. I hear all these guy complaining about Iboats loading slow but I've never had a problem.I work with a guy from that area. His parents have a large farm up there. Claude Chenard. He was a regular in the bar up there.LOL.

After reading these posts and deciding I really didn't have a problem, I downloaded firefox anyway. Wow, a noticeable improvement. I'll try it for a while and may continue using it. Thanks, guys!

I kind of like safari, but it keeps locking up for me ... not sure if it because of XP, McAfee, or using it the same time as Outlook??? But it will be blazing fast and good for a while and all of a sudden slow to a ccrawl before locking up totally. That is not a iboats problem, it is a Safari problem.

I love the penguin , too , but , it still isn't for everyone .
I keep an XP machine for apps that I cannot find a workable free alternative for .

Yep , this site gets slow on occasion , but is a favorite .:D
Can't see a big difference between FF or IE .
Editing my hosts file on the Gatesware box hepled some , as I blocked most of the banner ad crap . It helped most for Ebay and a couple other sites I frequent .

Re: slow iboats site verry slow

I've used Firefox and IE and, yes, Firefox is always faster.

I'm not a pc guru, but my oldest son is pretty good (his title is Technical Directory at the company where he works). Years ago he suggested to me that when using IE I should often go into Tools/Delete Browsing History and click Delete Temporary Internet Files and also click Delete History. He recommended I clean up cookies from time to time by going to Tools/Internet Options and clicking Settings in the Browsing History section and then View Files on the next page that pops up. You can get rid of the junk, but keep the good stuff.

He also advised that the hard drive(s) be defragmented from time to time.

Getting off the topic , but I have to say that you should only do a defrag. after a complete backup .

Why ?

During the defrag process , the data on the HD is put into RAM (volatile memory..) as it is being reorganized onto the HD .
1 glitch or loss of power and you have data loss , and worst case scenario , you may be doing a complete OS reinstall .
Be carefull ...
