Hello fellow Boaters. 1996 J150EXEDB in slow mode from port temp sensor. Location :Space Coast Florida.
I'm very used to Mercury OB but this is my 2nd Johnson. And only few trips on this new boat, to me.
I'm asking for help. Motor is not overheating, but it did start to overheat from Mud Dobbers when I cranked it up from sitting 2+ months, on muffs. Got it cleared up, running at normal temp. (ORDERED NEW IMPELLER KIT AS WELL, not installed yet). But it seemed to be on rev limiter, I ran boat it is not running above 2300 rpm. Loaded it back on, home we went. Upon further investigation I discovered SLOW mode, new to me. But by process of elimination it is port temp sensor. Disconnect it runs perfect. Never had an issue with this motor. VRO is deleted and un hooked as well, as no Warning horn either..
My question is this are these sensors one n done?
It is very much newer sensor by looking at it.
2nd question if I hook a horn up, is it gonna sound from no VRO?
On hose it runs 1 bank about 145ish other bank 135 ish. Hit with laser thermometer. I assume it has Tstats at 140 degrees.
I even ran with no Tstats temp was about 100 degrees still SLOW Mode.
i have not put ohmmeter on sensor yet.
I asking for some education on John Rudest?
Thanks in Advance

The sensor is supposed to reset when the motor has cooled. I would locate a sensor, but not order it yet. Replace thermostats and waterpump, with the whole kit. If she is still in S.L.O.W. mode, replace sensor.

Your motor also has a shift assist switch that kills spark to 1/2 the motor. You should check that out, to make sure it is not an issue.

Ok, Ridger that. I do see the shift assist. I understand it drops RPMs some to shift more smoothly.
My impeller kit is in, today. Will tackle that soon.
Thanks for input!
