So I was buttoning my boat up for the onslaught of Earl (not raining yet) and on my way back to the truck to leave I saw this wonder. The photo is very bad, as my phone doesn't do well after dusk (it was actually bright out, go figure). Past the moored boat you can see a 24' cruiser coming through the marina. He was throwing a very significant wake. I debated running to the end of the dock and giving him a piece of my mind, but I didn't. How do people not realize that plowing water bow high is NOT no wake. We deal with it a bit, as being on a river everyone seems to have to go by, and a lot of them don't understand no wake.

No Wake to me is like a speed trap on the highway, disobeying a No Wake is like asking to get stopped and asked "sir did you drink all those emptys". You never know whos watching haha. But, in all seriousness people that don't own boats or property that get torn up by wake just dont get it. At my place we are a part of the chesapeake bay restoration or the wetland act or some crap but basically we CAN'T bulkhead or lay down rip rap and people come barreling though our creek and every year the yard disapears a little and a stiff middle finger does nothing but make me feel a little better.

Thanks Bob, helps you see the boat better. I can only imagine what that wake felt like had I still been on the boat. I actually don't mind rocking around in the boat a bit, unless I'm doing something tedious or possibly dangerous (working on the motor, drive etc...).

It just amazes me that someone thinks that is a no wake speed.

Re: Slow No Wake photo

I took my parents out on the boat for my father's birthday a few weeks back. A nice sunset cruise. About that time some jack*** comes through a no wake zone pulling a skier after dusk. The channel is only about 30 yards wide with piers on one side and rocks on the other. We anchored up and watched as he did it about six more times until it was so dark we could only see his nav lights across the cove. I blew the air horn when he came by the first time and he looked at me as if I was disturbing him!!! I only knew he was still pulling a skier when they came by on the last pass because I could have thrown a rock and hit him (would have if I'd had one). F'ing moron. It is people like that who give power boaters a bad name.

Yup he just a dummy, more of the me me me i i i culture we have created here.

Somewhat related I was recently on a river that people cruise boats , speed boats , do tubing, swim (maybe death wish?) as well as ski flea on called the Fox river and all the vessels are running at full bore, maybe 100 or so yards across.
I could not imagine being a property owner along that type of crap between the noise from the boats and the chop created by them along with all the property damage and or investment you have to make to repair the damage done.
Chain of lakes IL, all full bore all the time, go all which ways and generally be a moron, IMO dumbest boating scene I ever saw.

Off topic, but blast from the past. Got married on the Fox River 10 years ago in Oct. Beautiful place. Sorry to hear about the idiots.

Re: Slow No Wake photo

Last Monday at the ramp I use, I'm waiting to load, and a guy comes through slowing cruising the no wake zone, and only about 50 ft behind the guy loading. OF course he's doing the slow plough, throwing up a 6" wake, and causing the loading vessel to start bouncing as its going on the trailer.

I am sure if you asked the cruiser about his wake he'd tell you that he wasn't going fast, as if that is all that matters. It seems typical, even for people that have boated for years. Many have no idea what they're doing.

Re: Slow No Wake photo

i always assumed no wake meant 6 mph.
you can still throw off a decent wake at 6 mph.
so no wake does not always mean no wake.

I'm usually in the boat with 4 people max, but was at full capacity (10) after a party heading over to home run cove at the SF giants ballpark. Was doing barely 3 MPH according to GPS, but got stopped by the cops...All that weight made my wake was significant even at a crawl. At that speed I was not even looking back

I would say this mentality is why that guy ran through plowing a decent sized wake. I personally go through with just a ripple. I guss no wake doesn't mean the same thing to all people.

You know what they say when you ASSume things ....

NO WAKE really does mean NO WAKE. You may find these definitions of state-specific Maryland boating terms interesting. Pay special attention to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ones and how they say NOTHING about 6 MPH. From the Maryland Boaters Education Course, you may want to consider taking it:

"No wake" is defined by each state. It means different things in different states. In NH it means 6 MPH or less unless it's not possible to maintain steerage, but if you are throwing a wake at 5.5 MPH, you will ilikely get stopped, just because it's stupid.

Re: Slow No Wake photo

Those 24' cruisers bow up like that produce a huge wake, I was almost swamped by one while fishing one day, the guy slowed down for me but the wake was worse than if he just passed by on plane, those bass boats with the big 300's WOT barely have any hull in the water don't wake much more than a ripple, but those cruisers bow up make a big hole. just my observations.

Re: Slow No Wake photo

I like 45auto's graph. No Wake should not = a set speed, you must watch the push your giving off your boat at any given time. I can go 6 mph with just myself in the boat & it pushes nothing, with 4 other people & myself it pushes a sizable wake. Every situation must be an on the spot call. BTW: every time I'm loading my boat on the trailer, (by myself most times), it never fails someone will be going by & throw my line off & I'll need to back out & try again. Not to repeat but, everyone only cares about themselves & that will never change.
