Slow Speed Needle?

Ok, I'm rebuilding my carb and cant seem to figure out the order of washers for the slow speed needle. There is a bit of black rubber that seems like some type of seal, it was not included in the rebuild kit. Do I need that, or do the cork o-rings replace it? I attached a picture of how i think the o-rings and bushing goes, and a picture of the black seal that I'm not sure about. I'm thing I should try to take it off since the o-rings don't fit over it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

put it together just the way you have it in the picture, Minus the rubber piece. The corks are packings. When you screw everything in, The outside thread will press the cork tight to the shaft. the more you tighten the outside piece, You'll notice the harder it will be to turn the shaft.

Don't bottom out the shaft very hard at all, or you'll screw it up. far as the outside threaded piece, Not to hard with that either. Just hard enough that the shaft does not easily move. although you do want to be able to move the shaft for adjustment.

if it's new, It could be set up to go inside the packings up against the shaft. I don't know, I'm not there looking at it. But if it looks like it fits that way try it. It's not rocket science. You know what you're trying to accomplish now. just Tinker with it and see which way it tightens up on the shaft best.

Not sure what that black rubber part is. Never seen one in all the carbs I've rebuilt. I'd take it off and just use the nylon washer, which prevents the packing washers from being crushed by the packing nut. You don't need the other nylon washer on the other side of the packing. That should be for the high speed needle.

I'll bet that because that's a new after market packing set, That the black rubber does indead go in the center of those packings. But I don't have it in my hand so I can't be sure. At any rate what ever it takes to get a seal around that shaft should work fine.

That black rubber piece was stuck to the threads and was kinda falling apart, it would not slide at all so i ripped it off, used the two cork o-rings, one nylon washer on the packing nut side and it seems to work correctly as far as I can tell, this is the first carb I've overhauled so we'll find out.

Bet that old rubber piece was an o-ring someone put on in the past thinking it was supposed to go there. Probably got deformed over the years.

I bet youre right. When I took it apart there was only one cork 0-ring and no nylon washers, whoever did it before was probably just trying to get it to seal and used a rubber o=ring.
