Hi,
I've got a 71 100hp rude , it takes a long time to start from cold. once she's warm starts right up. I choke it , bulb is firm, new amplifier and coil. It just takes a long time to start.
Thanks,
Taco

Re: slow start

I guess we need you to define long time, 10 minutes, 20 seconds, 4 hours???

Time is a measurement.

My electric start motors take around 5 to 10 seconds. What is your starting procedure. Is the choke working properly, is there a cold start lever on your controls?

Re: slow start

Electric choke is working. I don't have a cold start lever. it takes a couple minutes of cranking before it starts. I haven't checked the compression yet. I've got to get a gauge.
Thanks for the help,
Taco

Re: slow start

I'm guessing a vacuum leak in a fuel line or, your choke plates aren't totally closing. If they aren't closing completely, it will be hard to start just as you describe. You are wise to get it fixed because running the starter that long is really hard on the starter. I'll bet that starter is really hot after cranking that long. You for sure need to know the compression as everyone said. Low compression will give the same problems.

Re: slow start

your motor, pump fuel bulb till hard, throttle as far forward as it will go in neutral. engage choke, turn key, should start if not release choke, turn key, if not choke again. if not repump bulb, and repeat. if you continuously choke it will flood.

Re: slow start

From what I can tell, the choke solenoid will only shut off after 1-e\motor is warm, 2- battery is disconnected. The bulb is firm, I can still squeeze it tho. Does this mean a leak? Electric shift, I leave it in the start position, should I put it all the way forward?
Thanks,
Taco
