Slow Starter Problems

Ok so i took my boat out this weekend and as i cranked it up and took of the cover i noticed that the starter was struggling trying to turn the flywheel fast enough get the motor to crank. So i kept trying finally i got the motor running after about 20mins of trying . I noticed a little smoke coming out of the starter so when i did live the dock i did turn off my motor once, because i didnt want any problems on the water...so i get home and the boat wont start at all...just makes a clicking noise..i put a new soleniod on about 2 months ago...and ALL the connections are clean (i just sanded them all down) a day b4 a went out...is the starter shot ??? and the soleniod ???? way is cranking so slow?? ...115 93 johnson model VJ115LETS

Sounds like you got it too hot and may have melted a solder connection in starter; best to take it to a starter shop and have it rebuilt/repaired. That's way cheaper than the cost of a new starter. slow turning may have been worn brushes. Good luck

thanks "will bark" i thought it was the starter..i found i new starter on amazon for 87.00 is it cheaper then that to have it rebuilt/repaired????

Last week I paid $30.00 to get one repaired; could be higher in FL; I don't know

Might be a good idea to see how juice in the battery and make sure the terminals are clean and the main wires in good condition.
My friend recently was on the point of getting a new starter, i checked the main battery cables and they were rubbish.
Thick wires but corroded internaly all the way along.
I would try thick jumper wires first if the battery is fully charged.
If the battery voltasge is low that will be the problem and cause slow starter and clicking noise.

Possible the brushes are bad. Easy to pull that starter apart and check the brushes and armature commutator. Bombardier sells replacement brush sets.

thanks every for your help....i'll pull off the starter and get it checked out...all the connections are clean, i just sanded them down & i recharge the battery every time b4 i go out ....is 4g wire sufficient????

Do the cheap things first. Check battery is fully charged, clean the connections, use a pair of known good booster cables in line with your battery cables. If things improve then as previously stated here you have internal corrosion in the cables and no anount of starter rebuilding will improve matters. Then move to the starter itself. Could be any or all of the above.
