I bought a 99 Ranger with a 90hp Mariner (21 pitch) 3 blade aluminum prop that is a little chewed up. Marina said it had good compression and everything checked out fine before I bought it. I took it out this weekend and it was sluggish on take off and would not plane out - had to put someone on front deck to get it to plane out. When it did finally plane, it sounded like the motor was running wide open in neutral and bounced on the water. After a second or two, it settled in and ran about 42 mph at 5800 - 6000 RPMs - which seemed ok.

Do I need a different prop? What kind/type? Any ideas why motor is sluggish? Do I have other problems? Thanks!!

Re: Sluggish take off/prop help

First, i think it should be moved to the prop section.

I'm not an expert in any ways but it could be that the engine is mounted too high.

Also, did you try timming it fully in at start-up?
