My dad and i have been trying to figure out what is wrong with our boat...He has a 1991 or 1992 yamaha 4 stroke 50hp outboard. At slow idle it runs fine..but when you floor it it doesnt seem like it can get any power. We have taken the fuel filter off and cleaned it and also put gas treatment thinking this might be the problem. We adj. the idle screws and put it back in the water. With just him in the boat it would get up on a plane but when we both were in it it would not plane out. (neither of us are large men) Of coures we could not even get the air filter off to check it so.... It runs great out of the water (with hose hooked up to it) but when it gets in the water it seems like it is starved for gas. Any help with this would be great. HAHA Neither one of us are mechanics so try to explaine as simple as you can . ha .:) Note: we could not find a manual for it. If any one could tell us where to get one that would be great.

Thanks

Re: Sluggish

Get the model number off the bracket...

Your problem sounds like a bad fuel pump or fuel restriction problem.
What maintenance history has been done to this motor?
When was the last time it was running right?

Parts can be obtained from www.boats.net once you get the model number.

Re: Sluggish

We changed the spark plugs out about a year ago, then shortly after it stared running bad. We dont use the boat a whole lot so it gets set up for most of the year.. just take it out to run it once and a while. So it been running like this for about a year now. Whne you floor it it starts to take off then it starts bogging down , but it you pull back on the gas just a bit it tries to grab more RPMs. We are just hoping it is something we can try before taking it to the shop and spending alot of money we dont have right now.

Re: Sluggish

Try another fuel supply, like a 6 gallon can with fresh fuel. Do a search and check some of the posts for "seafoam treatment". It is a way of running a fuel additive through the carbs to help clean them. Seems like the problem is fuel or carb related. Good luck!
