Re: small gash in my boat today
another way to get a backing if you can not get to the cut is to, get yourself a piece of cardboard, put a small hole in the center of the cardboard, thread a piece of mono fishing line through it and tie several knots to the end the went through the cardboard, then apply your filler on the the line end, stick it through you gash, then pull the line so the filler side of your cardboard sticks to the back of your gash, hold it there until it sets up, then cut the line let it cure completly then start you patch work, its not a stong repair, but it will hold, and give your patch somthing to grab too, but like our surpreme commander said, the best way is to fiberglass the back side, thats where the strengh will come from, I had worked with fiberglass for over 15yrs, fixing bathtubs, showers, boats, and rv's for a company called miracle method, duraglass seemed like one of the best fillers that I ever used, and yes you are right, it was green, it has strands of fiberglass in it, for strenth. good luck...tony
if you can get to the back, by all means, lay a layer or two of cloth with resin, if its on the side of the boat, you might want to add a little, cabasel, its thicking agent, to the resin. after you layed the mat and resin, throw a piece of wax paper over the complete repair, smooth it out with your hand, then let it dry and pull the wax paper, this will give you a smooth repair on the inside with no sanding
