Re: small gash in my boat today

is the gash all the way through the fiberglass?? if it is through the glass, I would lay one layer of cloth and resin, about a inch extra on the inside of the boat if you can get to it, then I would use a product called duraglass, its like a bondo, but its make for marine applactions, it has fiberglass in it, sand it smooth and airbrush marine color over it, do several coats, then on the last coat apply, a blending thinner over the top, let it dry atleast 72hrs, then hand wipe some wax on it, it should come out just fine

pull the inside panel, clean it up, apply a couple of layers of glass, as a back up, reinforceing, then proceed to the outside as above.

Re: small gash in my boat today

another way to get a backing if you can not get to the cut is to, get yourself a piece of cardboard, put a small hole in the center of the cardboard, thread a piece of mono fishing line through it and tie several knots to the end the went through the cardboard, then apply your filler on the the line end, stick it through you gash, then pull the line so the filler side of your cardboard sticks to the back of your gash, hold it there until it sets up, then cut the line let it cure completly then start you patch work, its not a stong repair, but it will hold, and give your patch somthing to grab too, but like our surpreme commander said, the best way is to fiberglass the back side, thats where the strengh will come from, I had worked with fiberglass for over 15yrs, fixing bathtubs, showers, boats, and rv's for a company called miracle method, duraglass seemed like one of the best fillers that I ever used, and yes you are right, it was green, it has strands of fiberglass in it, for strenth. good luck...tony:)

if you can get to the back, by all means, lay a layer or two of cloth with resin, if its on the side of the boat, you might want to add a little, cabasel, its thicking agent, to the resin. after you layed the mat and resin, throw a piece of wax paper over the complete repair, smooth it out with your hand, then let it dry and pull the wax paper, this will give you a smooth repair on the inside with no sanding

firehog i understand you . i used to do body work...if i can get to the back side put some glass in there and put duraglass over top flush to get smooth repair..if i cannot get in how do i get a strong repair from the outside. cardboard is a nice idea but wont the repair just fall inside the boat???
the worst part is not fixing it . it was watching me do this damage...

no it wont fall insid, after you put the cardboard in place, it will stay there, use extra filler on the cardboard so it comes out the front, smooth it over with your finger inside the gash, that will make it stay inplace and grip to the surface, then fill the rest in with fill to complete your repair, but I would give it my best shot to get behind it first, duraglass is flexable

Bob,

Sorry to hear about the damage to the boat but it's nice to see that you got the boat on the water. I was on the water yesterday as well.

Good luck getting it fixed.

Re: small gash in my boat today

this is a really good thread. good advise firehog. i just fixed a few small damaged spots on my boat with marinetex. that stuff is legit!

My question is:::: a lot of the underside of my boat is peeling. in a lot of small circles. do i sand these spots down, use more marinetex, and then a clearcoat or gelcoat?

Also, what do people do to get their boats off the trailer to work on the spots where the boat sits???

And (unrelated) firehog, how is that casino out there and how far from the east bay? hotel? (delta) thx. good stuff!

Thanks Delsol, I'll have to look into one of those for my next fixer upper, It's sharp I like it. After you repair it you can look into the millions of Graphics to go over the top if your not satisfied with the results. Ohh I showed the pic of the boat to my wife and she gave me the same answer she always does, what ever I want to do, I am going to look into it,Thanks >>Pat Let me know if its for sale!!:D
