Small hole in LU

2005 Johnson 2S 115Hp. While flushing , I noticed a small hole just above and in front of the water intake. Water shoots out of it while on the muffs. Looks designed that way. Anyone know why its there?

its a drain for the water pump so it does not keep water trapped in the pump housing and lower unit cavity.
