I have an early 60's 50 hp Merc which I found water in the lower unit. Today I was doing some looking and found a small maybe 1/8 inch hole toward the front on the right sight of the prop housing. When I tilted it water drained from the hole. Is this hole suppose to be there or is it a defect in the housing??

Dave;

Those are designed holes to prevent water accumulation which could freeze and crack your housing.

carholme you are a lifesaver. Always helping me out. But now back to tracking down where my water issue is coming from. I drained the oil and am going to the correct washers and not o-rings from NAPA before I go the gasket route.

Hole is there on purpose. Water in the oil? Or just in the housing? Water will be in the housing from the exhaust.

IN the oil. Strange thing is I blew some air thru the fill tube I made and had some water blow out of the flush hole that I had the pug out of. I am guessing this shouldn't happen?

Dave;

Not too sure what fill tube you are referring to. Do you mean that you made a tube for filling the LU with oil?

IN the oil. Came out looking like coffee with cream. I went and got new washers gonna try that since I found one was missing. Anything else I should look at?
