Can anyone tell me the difference in a small and large gear case in an Evinrude engine ? I see this referenced regarding different props in some articles. Mine is a 70 hp 1975 model. I would think it would be the large one.

thanx

It's probably a large gearcase. The only 70/75 models with the small gearcase were the short-shaft (15-inch) transom models. Not many shorts made...

Re: Small or large gear case ?

if he is seeing that on Prop boxes...I bet the props are for V4 models mostly and he would use a prop for a SMALL gear case.

I have a 1988 70 HP evinrude and i can interchange the prop with my 1995 115 hp and my 1997 90 hp both the later are V4's with small gear cases...ie 13 spline shafts....

What he said.

I interchanged a prop from a 1977 70hp with my 1980 115. They are considered small gearcase and the V6 has the large gearcase.

Re: Small or large gear case ?

Chine explained it. In the 3 cylinder line the "large" gearcase was used on the 20" models. The 15" models used a smaller case and were mostly used in racing. The "large" 3 cylinder case uses the same props as the V4. The 15" motors used (basically) a 50 hp style prop. They were sometimes refered to as "Sprint" gearcases (nothing to do with NASCAR or phones).
