Small Rectifier Test Results

Hi all,

New here and need a little help interpreting my "Small Rectifier Test" results (thanks, Joe Reeves!). I just bought a 1995 Aquasport 175 with a 1995 Johnson 88 SPL. Tach and charging system aren't working. The tach does "zero" out when the ignition is on. The previous owner was messing with the batteries the night before I bought it so there's a strong possibility that he blew the rectifier. I'm just not familiar enough with this test to interpret the results conclusively. Could someone help? Is mine blown? Here are the results:

Black Lead --> Ground
Yellow=no reading
Yellow/Gray=no reading
Red=No Reading

Red Lead --> Ground
Yellow=1580
Yellow/Gray=No reading/intermittent "weird" readings lasting only for a second
Red=790

Black Lead --> Red Wire
Yellow=1195
Yellow/Gray=886

Red Lead --> Red Wire
Yellow=No Reading
Yellow/Gray=No Reading

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide here.

Re: Small Rectifier Test Results

It takes 8 tests. Many digital multimeters won't work. It may though. If it has a diode test function use that. Analog meters or a simple continuity light are the easiest.

Connect meter leads between one yellow lead and the case. You should get either a high or low resistance reading.

Now switch the meter leads. You should get either a high or low resistance reading, but the opposite of the first test. In other words, if it was high, now it should be low.

That was the first two tests. Now do the same two on:

The other yellow lead and case (2 tests)
A yellow lead and red lead (2 tests)
The other yellow lead and red lead (2 tests)

That's 8 total. It has to pass all 8.

Thanks, F R. I found the diode test mode on my multi meter and did the test again. The first one failed. Two low readings on the yellow/gray wire. Got a new rectifier on the way!

Re: Small Rectifier Test Results

Just did mine tonight. A very easy replacement. My original had yellow, yellow/grey, red. No black. The new one had 2 yellows and red. Instructions came with it stating that the 2 yellows are interchangeable and don't require the yellow/grey coding. My Tach never had an issue, but no charge. It was a 2 min job and fixed the issue. Went right to 13.8V @1000
