Greetings...

1981 Mercruiser 470 on a '81 19.5' Wellcraft Sunhatch - Lifetime boater now getting into my first real boat. Always fresh water run.

I have a small leak of warm exhaust water running down the interior stern of my boat, only when underway, and not when on muffs in the driveway. I suspect a leak in the exhaust bellow to the exhaust pipe from the elbow, or the pipe itself.

Does the engine need to be pulled to replace the pipe? Before I get into it, is it more likely the bellows between the elbow and pipe? I'd like to have the parts on hand to do the job in one trip if possible.

Thanks,
Ed

the water exits the elbow and goes thru a rubber coupling to the exaust pipe.If the coupling clamps are tight and does not have a hole in it then the exaust pipe might have a hole in it. To replace that ,the drive comes off and the motor comes out.
If it only leaks with the motor running , look for damaged coupling or loose clamps, it is leak with the motor off, then suspect the exaust pipe

Check the hose going from the heat exchanger to to the exhaust elbow, make sure the clamp is tight.
