Could anyone make a recommendation on the type of motor and gearing I could use for a small personal watercraft
(very small Jetski).?

looking for a very small internal combustion or electric engine

I think a little more information is needed here. It would be nice to know exactly what you are starting with and what you are trying to accomplish.

These types of things would help as a starting point:
- Hull type (like a jetski then?)
- Are we to assume this will plane?
- Jet or outboard with a prop
- What size exactly
- Keep in mind that you can't put much weight at all on something "very small". That limits the choice of engines, as does the safety factor.
- Don't plan on planing with an electric motor

This sounds like a homemade project of some sort. As general advice, you'll generally get most bang for the buck with light weight out of a 2 stroke. At high rpms they put out a lot of HP per pound of weight. Examples: Chainsaw, snowmobile, or older dirtbike engines.

You'll get more weight and less power, but more torque at lower RPMs from a 4 stroke lawnmower or street motorcycle type of engine.

As for electric...how long is your extension cord? :D

I agree we certainly need a LOT more details to make any specific recommendations (or to be more realistic...guesses.)

And as for gearing? A specific ratio is likely not needed for a small project. A wide variety of gearing could be accomplished with the many sizes, types, and pitches of propellers that are available.

Let us know what you're trying to do....this could be a lot of fun!
