Smart phone without a data plan

Okay my old casio brigade bite the dust, had an insurance plan because of wife's smart phone. The Brigade is no longer mad and the replacement is a Casio commader which is a smart phone, is this a good thing or not I have a very small data plan that I will keep will this be enough for weather bug once or twice a day 14 days a month?

I resisted the smart phone trend for several years because I'm hard on stuff. However, after destroying two Samsung Rugbys I decided to just bite the bullet and get an iphone thinking I might be more careful with something I knew would break if I mistreated it, and now I often wonder why it took me so long. Go for it, but heed my warning. When I got my iphone I mistakenly (read expensively) believed the tiniest data plan available would be sufficient. Don't make that mistake. Take a look at your plan and you may discover that you can tweak it enough that adding a small (but bigger than you currently have) data plan will cost little to no more. That's what I did and it's worked out great. Good luck.

A trend we are about to see up here is that there will be WIFI hotspots that extend from town to town (city to city) and this will mean basically cell coverage for data but not from a cell provider.
If and when this happens you should be able to get and make calls using your home # (kind of a call forward through you home computer to your mobile using the net, IP cell)

Is the Sprint network usable in your home/business area?

If so.....check out Virgin Mobile For as low as $30.00/month you can get unlimited text. unlimited data and 250 minutes of talk. For about $45 you keep the unlimited part and get 1200 minutes of talk.

I bought an Android phone (LG Optimus V) and can't tell you how useful I find the texting and internet part of it. More importantly the LG is a great PHONE! Voice quality is honestly way better than the I-phone. A lot of smart-phones are strong on the gadgets but amazingly weak as a phone. Not mine.

Virgin Mobile uses the Sprint network....which is no match for ATT or Verizon.....but in my area it works very well.

I dislike the idea of contracts...and I didn't want to pay upwards of $100 per month...so I think I found a good alternative.

Here is why I ask, I had a G'zone Brigade that I loved but it broke cracked body from somthing, I had insurance on it so I thought I would get it replaced instead of signing another contract. Well they no longer make it, I get a Commander instead, it is a smart phone but I have a small data plan on the other phone as it was required with the phone from Verizon. It is like 1 mb plan my wife is looking to get rid of her droid and I will have a smart phone, she likes to keep a eye on weather bug when we work, 12 hr shifts at night. I figure I pay for internet at 2 houses and see no reason to have it on a phone. I do know that they charge $10 for each additional mb after plan is up still cheeper than $30 for 4 mb if I use less than that.

Just started with Virgin a month ago and am thrilled so far for $35/mo for unlimited data, texting, and 300 mins voice. Wife got the Optimus and I got the Optimus Slider and we're happy with each.
