So I drill the 8 holes 4 inches from the chime on the Starboard side no issues. Installed starboard side no problem. Go to the port side and drill in the 6 holes same distance and the bottom 2 holes have a brownish water coming out. Wasn't that much just enough to barely fill a dentist cup that you use to gargle. I was like crap... I thought I hit a Fuel line or oil line. Touched it and smelled it and it wasn't any lubricant or any fuel. I called bayliner directly and got the NJ area customer manager Ken and he told me that they use treated plywood in their hull that are wet. And the moisture I see if from the treated wood. He said that I should continue with the install using 3M 5200 sealant and he said not to worry.

How does this sound to you guys? I can't see that bottom portion from where I installed the tabs from so I am alittle hesitant due to all the report of transoms routing out back in the old day. Is this a resonable excuse with the treated plywood they use?

Sound off time.

I did finish the install and it looks good. Can't wait to try it, but am I in for a transom rotting issue like from the old days?

I don't have any advice but that certainly doesn't sound good to me. I can't imagine they are fiberglassing wet wood into their hulls.

I hear yea. I say the same but I have no recourse either at this point. Again there wasn't by any means alot of water, but still brownish water. And I have had my boat mostly slipped for 2 month straight. So I'll keep tabs I guess on the situation and go from their. My lesson learned here is let the dealer drill holes into the boat. But, then even if I let the dealer do it they might of done the samething and said alittle water, whatever no biggy, and I would never know either.

if i drilled holes in any boat to install tabs and water came out. or any liquid for that matter. i would be concerned about the transom wood.. i'm with ezmobee.

that just don't sound right.

did ya save the liquid that came out of the hull. maybe ya could find someone that could chemically test it to say it's water or whatever (wood treatment stuff)..

regardless I think I would take it in to the dealerhip to have it documented. Years from now if you have an insurance claim and they say your transom rotted out due to improperly installing your smart tabs you have documentation. Or if you have to claim it through the dealership you can show it was a new boat, you brought it in and they blew it off.

No I didn't. Was in amazement when I saw it and was kinda of dumbfounded.

That is already done with Bayliner directy and with the dealer. By ways of a phone call and an email.

I am also concerned with the explanation as I would not think that the fiberglass/resin would stick to the wet wood and therefore not bond into a solid layup.

Since you slip your boat, is it possible that a fitting that was installed in the transom was not correctly sealed, allowing water intrusion? Perhaps you should inspect the fittings and screws/bolts and check for sealer.

Also, since your boat is new, perhaps if you have a protected area, you could uninstall the weeping screws and let it drain for a few days and perhaps inject some alcohol into the holes to help dry them out. Maybe even use a shop vac to pull out any additional moisture.

You haven't had the boat long enough to have rot, but it could be starting and you may be able to stop it now before it gets any worse.

When I installed my Smart Tabs last October, I got the same water coming out of some of the holes that I drilled. My boat is a 2004 Stingray 200LX. On the Stingray owner's forum, others have had the same thing happen to them.

There has been quite a bit of discussion on the forum about the water but nobody really seems to be able to explain where it is coming from and/or what causes it.

In my case, I had already read that others had experienced the water coming out of freshly drilled holes in the transom. When the water came out of mine, I didn't like it but I wasn't terrified either.

I installed the tabs using 3M 5200 sealer and the tabs work great. I'll keep an eye on my transom as best as I can. I'll also continue to monitor the Stingray forum to see if more info pops up in the future.

Actually, I have been talking to a couple of other bayliner owners some back to 05 and they have had the same issues without having any issues up to this point with the transom rotting. That being said I did have another long discussion with Bayliner Corp today in regards to this as I kinda wasn't buying it to some degree. They said that the treated plywood they use come from a manufacturer that guarentees that the wood won't rot hence, why bayliner offers a lifetime warranty on the hull and stringers. He specifically said this is one of the steps they have done to ensure they get the so called "Bayliner rep of having rotting transom and floors" off their backs. How true this is I have no idea. He could once again be blowing smoke up you know what. But I have this issue detailed in my HID number with Bayliner Corp and the dealer. And talk with some other 185 owners that have had the same issues with no rot (as of yet at least) make me feel alittle better.

Thanks Danny. You say you have an 04. How long have you had your smart tabs on? Just curious the length of time you have done this. Also do you slip your boat or is it trailered and off the water during nonuse?
