Smart tab report, Bass Boat

Spent the best part of the day on two different lakes testing and adjusting my new set of Smart Tabs. The boat in question is a 1987 (Glass) 1800 SF 18' Bass Tracker with a Merc 150 and a High 5 23 pitch prop. Soon to be changed to a 25 Pitch four blade. I have a 27 to try if I need it. The reason is obvious by looking at the RPM #s You do not see tabs of any sort on Bass Boats much if at all, and I wasnt sure I wanted them on my boat as I thought it handled fine as it was.

I installed them several days ago and wired them up out of the way so I could get some #s before deploying them. I modified the Mobster tabs that were sent to me even though John said he would send me angled onesas my transom is angled forward as are some Bass Boats. I wanted to have them the exact angle of my transom not to mention waiting for the others to get here. I think this modification is some of the reason I had to make such drastic changes. Speeds below are GPS.

Without With

58 MPH @ 6,200 59 MPH @ 6,300

Slow plane
25+MPH 15 MPH

Time to plane
5 sec. 2-3 sec.

This is the final results after adjusting them to the highest angle setting and the easiest preasure.

When I first tried the boat with the tabs in the beginning settings, I thought I had made a big mistake putting them on. The boat was horrible, and the trim was usless, the nose was in the water so bad, it was awfull. The prop blew out every time I gave it even the least bit of throtle. I imeadiatly put it back on the trailer and adjusted the tension to the softest position and then launched again. This time it was much better, but was still too much lift while running WOT, Prop blew out way befor 50 MPH. I then decided to go to another nearby lake and before I launched I adjusted the angle up as far as it would go, Im probably at about 20 degrees now. Now the boat is a new boat. It is very stable, dosnt lean into the turns nearly as hard. I do not know why it would make any difference with the steering torque, but you can let go of the wheel at about any speed and the boat goes straight. My wife was with me, and the boat stays flat, I even went out by myself for a bit and it still stayed flat. I wasnt able to use the trim at low speeds before as it would porpose badly if you did at all, but now you can adjust the attitude of the boat while going 15 MPH on up, no porposing.

Im sold, and thanks John for taking the time with me and explaining your product, and a great one it is. :D :D

LubeDude;

Thanks for taking the time to do before and after testing. Also for your time to make the correct adjustments. The best part about the system seems to be the ability to adjust it to the individual boat.

Trimming the plates obviously reduced the surface area and this was one of the reasons you needed to set the pressure at the minimums. A bigger plate will compress the actuator easier.

Anyway, with the reduction in planning speed and time to plane the more agressive prop should increase the top speed even more. Probably 2 to 3 mph at minimum.

Again thanks!

John

Excellent info.

Did you mount the plates flush with the bottom or up? If so how much?

Re: Smart tab report, Bass Boat

As sugested by the liturature with the tabs, the plates were installed 1/2" from the bottom of the boat.

It was guite interesting at the boat ramp when I pulled the boat out. There was a guy there that had a Stratos Bass Boat, He saw that I had the Hi 5 prop and wanted to know how I liked it, He then saw the Smart Tabs and his reply to seeing them was, "Why do you have those on there, doent your boat handle well without them"? I talked to him about them and how I felt and what the differences were, and he was quite interested after that. I told him, You know how your boat acts like its shooting for the moon when you stab it to get your boat on plane, and he said yes, Well your boat wont do that anymore! He thought that the tabs were worth the price if it would stop that only.

My wife really liked the fact that we could now just leasurly cruise along at 20 MPH and even less, as she really dosnt like going fast.

LubeDude, any chance I could talk you into reposting some of your story over at the CS group? Lots of guys there have mentioned Tabs, but no one has any yet! thanks RichG

LubeDude,

Thanks for the info - I'm impressed with your detail. You've convinced me to ignore my son's adivce and get the Smart Tabs instead of a hydrofoil. I believe my wife would enjoy a slightly slower cruise on step, too.

Rich g99:

I somewhat hesitate to post on a board that is specific boat oriented, Maybe I would be looked at as busting in where not wanted. Might be a place for Nautijohn to post.

Because i need to reprop, Im thinking that I maybe should go to a three blade because I allready have plenty of lift. Whats your thoughts?

Re: Smart tab report, Bass Boat

LubeDude.. re posting on "specific board etc. " well, I'm the manager of the CS board and I think the guys would LOVE to hear your story. If you OK it, I'll condense your remarks and direct them back here for the whole story. I won't do it without your OK, though.

If I were to ask NautiJohn to comment, it WOULD be advertising and we very much discourage that. Comments from an individual user is exactly what we want, and get, every day.

Thanks for your insight, which-ever way you choose. RichG

Rich;

you are absolutely correct - third party reporting is far more valuable. Call me as I have an idea. We have sold Smart Tabs to a number of Carolina Skif owners. 800-233-0194

Re: Smart tab report, Bass Boat

The extra lift is a plus for staying with a 4 or 5 blade prop in my opinion.

The extra stern lift is almost the same as raising the motor. A 4 blade prop will run a higher X dimension than a 3. The 5 runs about the same as a 4.

I'd stick with the original plan of a 4 blade. By all means try a 3 blade if possible. Make sure its equal in technology (as close as possible) to your 4 blade. IE -- dont compare an aluminum prop with no rake to a Turbo.

Re: Smart tab report, Bass Boat

Took the prop off the Lavey Craft, 14.25 X 27P Turbo four blade, Cowabonga!! 5,500 RPM and 65+ MPH, GPS. We be flyin now. Lost some hole shot, but accepteble. I will be trying a 26P Three blade soon, also have a chance to try a 27P Lazer three blade.

Re: Smart tab report, Bass Boat

So let me get this correct - You where at 58 MPh at WOT and 6200 RPMs. with a 5 second to plane hole shot, with no tabs. Then with Smart Tabs you got on plane in 1/2 the time (2 to 3 seconds) and picked up 1 mph and 100 RPMs at WOT. Now you have changed from a high 5 23 pitch prop to a 4 blade 27 pitch prop ( 4 inches more pitch and 1 less blade) and the RPMs dropped to 5500 ( 700 less than before) and now you are running at 65 MPH
(7 MPH more). You said the hole shot suffered a bit - how is it now in comparrison to no Tabs and the five blade (origional set up).

The combination seems to have given you better acceleration, slower minimum plane speed, better handling, 7 MPH more Top End and 700 RPMs less (More fuel economy).

What do you think would have happend if you simply put the 4 blade 27 pitch turbo prop on the boat without the the Tabs?

Re: Smart tab report, Bass Boat

Honestly I do not think this boat would get on plane with this prop if I didnt have the tabs. I think Im about back to the original hole shot. This prop isnt going to be the final, I think what I need is a 25P-26P four blade, waiting for one to come up on Ebay, Im still going to try some threes just for fun. Id gladly rather have a little more RPM and a better hole shot, although my max RPMs are suppose to be right where they are. Boat sure kicks but* the way it is now though, That 14.25 prop sure looks big on there.
