I have a 20' checkmate spectra 201 with a yamaha 225 mounted on a porta 17inch setback lift.Will the smart tabs work on this application. Has anyone tried them with this kind of setback. I definitly do not want to sacrifice any top speed .

Re: smart tabs with 17"setback

We installed Smart Tabs on a 22' Maco with a 24" setback for the Ship Shape TV (DIY) show and they worked very well. As a matter of information - properly adjusted - Smart Tabs will not slow the boat and infact will increase top speed.
We have a satisfaction performance money back guaranty.

John ,Which model # would suit my application. I had them on my 17' Seaswirl with 80 # and lost 1-2 mph.

If you lost speed, you had them set too hard, or too much angle. You may have needed lighter actuators for which John is always more than happy to exchange. Properly set up, you will NOT loose speed from what I have seen.

Boston2;

80lb actuators are too much for a 17' boat, and I am sure you lost Top Speed. 60 lb actuators would be plenty for that boat unless there is a very unuasual set up.

For the 20' checkmate, with the 225 yamaha use the 80 lb actuators. #ST1290-80.

Keep in mind that any time you loose Top Speed with a planing device (ie: hydrofoil, Trim Tabs, etc) it is most likely that you have too much stern lift. This pushes the bow down at cruising speeds, you then need to trim the motor to raise the bow, and the result is the prop is running at an inefficient angle (out too far). The loss in forward thrust do to the prop angle causes the speed loss.
