I have a 19' Chris Craft Cavalier with a cuddy cabin. It is powered with a 140 Mercruiser 4 cyl. I wish the engine we bigger, but I'll save that for my next boat. In reading some posts on this site a read a few mentions about smart tabs. If I were to add these to my boat would it make it easier to get on plane? With the 4 cyl it takes a fair amount of effort. I also take the boat out on Lake Michigan. If/when the waves increase with this also help with porpoising? Are their any other advantages? Thanks in advance!!

Re: Smart Tabs

Of the hundreds of posts about Smart Tabs on this forum, the consensus seems to be: They really help getting up on plane and staying on plane at lower speeds. They also help with porposing in calm water and small waves. They are not as effective for larger waves, where you would need more force to keep the bow down. Fuel economy goes up and the boat rides better in general.

It seems you get almost all of the benefits of helm adjustable tabs with the Smart Tabs for a much lower cost, but you do lose the ability to tweak on the fly for a few specific conditions, mostly related to bad water conditions or leveling the boat from port to starboard. Ocean boaters seem to have more need for helm adjustable tabs. Helm adjustable tabs also require you to adjust them, so if you don't adjust them everytime you get on/off plane or conditions change they are not benefiting you as much as they could be. Smart Tabs just do their thing auto-magically.

Every one here who has them loves their Smart Tabs, as does everyone who has helm adjustable tabs. I have neither (yet), so I'm just posting what I've distilled from the many, many posts on the subject. I honestly still don't know which way I am going to go.

Re: Smart Tabs

Yes. The certainly did for me. I also have a 4 cylinder (110 hp), but my boat is lighter than yours. Smart Tabs made a new boat out of mine. :D

Re: Smart Tabs

Does anyone have any experience with the Smart Tabs SX line? This is a molded product instead of steel and are about $70 less for the set. I am wondering if this performs just as well. Thanks.

Re: Smart Tabs

Yes, and yes. There is only one size tab, so if your boat calls for one of the larger SS tabs you are probably better off with the SS ones. Also, and I could easily be wrong here, but I think if you boat in VERY rough water the SS ones might be a better option. However, performance wise I believe they are the same as the comparable sized SS ones.

Re: Smart Tabs

just a brief correction, porpoising is caused from under powerment or over trim, and will happens while at or near full throttle. It refers to the lifting/dropping motion of the bow, due to the inability of the motor to hold it up. the action of the bow moving due to hitting waves is not porpoising, although smart tabs may help somewhat with this condition.

Sorry to nit pick, but when were dealing on the forums, with people of differencing knowledge, and skill sets, it's important that were all using the correct terminology.

Re: Smart Tabs

Ya know Sean that is such a well worded response to the Smart Tabs question, it seems like the mods might want to stickie it or copy to a permanet thread.
