Smart trim tabs have tansformed my boat!!!

After reading the numerous member feedback here I decided to remove my hydrofoil and try using smart tabs for all of the reasons I mention below but especially so stop the continuous trimming of my engine and to lower the planing speed. I bought a set of Nauticus Smart Tabs SX (60lbs.) with the PR500 kit.

I bought this 1995 Larson 17.6' speedboat that had a hydrofoil installed on its 130HP Johnson outboard. Being new to boating I didn't really realize how poorly it planed and thought the continuous trimming was normal. I was not impressed with how it steered compounded with the hydrofoil that caused the steering to be harder/stiffer than normal.

With the new smart tabs installed it made the boat a joy to ride. Instead of planing at 20mph and I can now plane at 13-14mph which helps greatly when pulling a tube. The bow rise has been cut more than half which helps again with visibility and acceleration to towing speed has decreased. With the hydrofoil removed from the engine the steering has become less labor intensive. I now just have to set it and forget it most times. Porpoising wasn't too bad before on smooth water but with the engine trimming in its most efficient angle if the water was choppy the boat would porpoise so I had to keep it trimmed down to prevent it. With the smart tabs the porpoising has been eliminated. I have to say I have been so amazed at the difference these smart tabs have made I just had to post my results here.

Oh I forgot to mention that I saved quite a bit of fuel too. I was out all weekend and did the same identical trip to an island we go to as I did last month plus I pulled a tube to and from the island and SAVED at least $10-$15 in gas. It cost me about $45 this time around where it would cost me at least $60 before plus I pulled the tube the complete trip whereas earlier I only hauled the tube to the island.

Couple more trips and they will be paid for in fuel savings alone. They are worth every penny they cost. Mine work great.

Yes I was plowing in the water before but now I just glide. I could never get the RPM below 3800 without losing the planing. Now I can cruise at 3800 and go as low as 3200-3400. I am still just amazed how much they work as advertised. Normally manufacturers over exaggerate the benefits but not in this case!!!

Ok, Ive heard good bad and other......but mostly good. No problems with trailering or snaggin on things? I about to pull the trigger on some for my 21' Wellcraft. Did you install yourself? Thats my plan with copious amounts of 5200 on all of it....lol

I have had no problems with trailering and I haven't snagged them on anything yet. I purchased the optional PR500 kit so that I am able to lift them when parking in shallow water or while anchored at a sanddune or beach. Installation went smooth and I did them myself. On a 21' I think you'd need the 80 lbs actuators. I documented my findings quite well in my previous posts here and I highly recommend them if your are having similar problems.

Man, I'm glad to hear such good news. I've always recommended the smart tabs over those stupid fins people put on thier motors.

Thanks for the report back.

Re: Smart trim tabs have tansformed my boat!!!

Has anyone tried these on a shallow hull boat (fish/ski)? I have another tread going trying ("porpoising while trimmed down") to figure out why I am porpoising so bad and I am concidering smart tabs. I don't have much real estate on my transome for these without the transome tow straps getting in the way. I am going to make sure the porpoising is not my set up first, but if I cannot find anything wrong may end up picking some up.
