I was wanting to get a new propeller anyways,, i wanted to improve my wake. any suggestions??

also if you notice the worst part about the picture is the rutter snapped off the outdrive as well. has anybody had this happen or has tried to use a boat with it missing? do i have to replace the whole outdrive??

Wow that is bad... I hope i never do that however it is probably going to happen to me with my luck. To answer your question on the prop i have no idea however the local prop shop here near me, does skeg repair so i would think it is possible for some other shops to do it. You wouldnt have to replace the whole lower unit, but from what i have read if that is a ss prop on there now with that much damage there may be internal damage and it may be worth looking into that part of it. I do believe the skeg repair is much cheaper then replacing the whole lu. Also i have read others on here that dont have or use the skeg. From my understanding it is a prop protection part. Doesnt effect much if missing. I may be wrong but i think i am pretty close to the right way to think on it.

Don't forget to replace your trim tab too - that is also trashed. To have the skeg repaired without using a bolt on repair kit you will have to remove and completely disassemble the lower unit, they can't weld on it when it is all together.

Yes. It is also a sacrificial anode to protect the expensive parts from damage and it helps trim the steering so the boat does not pull to one side or the other. Yours needs replaced.

Search SkegGuards right here on IBoats at the MARINE STORE for a somewhat less expensive repair of the skeg. That and a new prop will probably be all you need to get back on the water.

If im seeing this right theres a bunch of oil leaking outta somewhere too, as has already been stated with a SS prop and that much damage it is likely you nuked other parts in the lu, but I would find out where that oil is coming from, looks like quite a bit... Unless it a shadow or somthing... Good luck!

Is the propshaft bent? Thats one tough LU if its has no internal damage.

You smashed the prop against what ? Was the engine locked/unlocked. Did the engine flipped upwards ?

Owwch! That don't look so good. Sure you can fix the skeg and stick a new prop & torque tab on, however I would be very surprized if at the very least you didn't twist or bend the prop shaft.

SS props put up more of a fight than aluminum ones don'tcha know.

It may not be leaking oil, yet. But I'd highly recommend inspecting the internals 'fore I did any external work on it.

Good luck!

Oh wait, here it is... Posting multiple threads is not condoned by the iboats staff or me for that matter... Ive replied to both, thinking somehow my post didnt stick... Although im not a staffer, please dont post multiple threads asking the same question... This forum gets PLENTY of traffic, perhaps not like other sites, and there is no need for multiple threads, as long as you post it in the right place you will get plenty of help... K thanks...

Hey Dream,

The prop shop can add the aluminum, you do not need the original pieces. for the prop anyways...

At the very least (if you're lucky), you are looking at a new propellor, a skeg and trim tab repair. So figure on around $500 and up. You never did mention whether or not your prop is aluminum or stainless steel. If it is stainless, I'd think about an insurance claim because you could be looking at $3-4000 in damage. New prop shaft, bearings, assorted bits and pieces add up real fast. For more wake, get a wakeboarding boat, a different prop won't help you with your wake. Also, invest in a chart for the waters you boat in. A $20 map would have saved this headache. Good luck!! Hopefully the damage is limited to some welding and a new prop.

Looks like almost the exact damage I did to mine a few weeks ago. Luckily, I had an aluminum prop on it and the plastic hub snapped before any damage was done to the LU. I bought a new 4 blade Solex aluminum from iboats (with rubber hub this time) and I'm back on the water. I figure on having the skeg fixed when I have her winterized. Good luck.

As mentioned earlier check the propshaft for wobble which would indicate a bent shaft. If bent repalce. Looking at how much of the skeg is gone the wallop was severe and could make the housing out of round. Meaning that if the gearcase ever has to come apart it might not be possibile to remove the bearing carrier without without breaking the housing.

They do not have to disassemble it or even take it off the boat. Mine was broken just like this and they fixed it no problem. As long as it doesn't get into the rounded part of the housing you'll be fine. Of course thats assuming the whole thing isn't damaged internally already. Definately check the prop shaft before investing anything in a repair.

Also the Skeg Guards I found won't cover this large of a break it will have to be welded. It only cost 150.00 to fix mine.

+1 here......i've also done the samething, cost was 150 and you couldn't even tell that i ever had it done......the other skeg was worn down a bit before i broke it and after it handled like a new boat. After i broke the skeg on the water i tried driving home at a higher speed and had no control over the boat, you definatly need the skeg on your lower unit for your boat to perform, it's like a rudder it helps greatly to turn the boat....
