well i was rigging my 1988 225hp vro yesterday and the battery cable was hooked up, i then "jumped" the trim wire to tilt up, controls were not hooker up yet, well after that i was moving the flywheel by hand, a minute after i noticed smoke comming from flywheel. iquickly disconnected the battery cable, i noticed that a couple of magnets were loose and today i looked again i saw 2 square 1"x1" things under the flywheel with 3 wire comming from them each, i noticed what looked like black tear drop shape hanging from it and on the wires looked to coated with liquid tape,

any ideas what shorted out, this motor have a 60 day warrenty, but i still upset its messed up, oh yea the tilt ram is leaking big time going in the down position only,no its out off fluid

thanks

The two components you'r looking at are the charge, and power coils. Sounds to me that you let the smoke out of them. Since the engine is under warranty, let the dealership replace them. Your lucky this happened now. That flywheel, and stator would be pricey.

Re: smoke from flywheel ?

It sounds like you have 3 problems that have to be corrected, flywheel magnets, stator replacement, and rectifier/regulator replacement.

An internally shorted regulator allows current to flow thru the stator coils while the motor is not running. This overheats them, melts the insulation, and causes the flywheel to get hot.

Most of the time, a regulator is damaged from voltage spikes or intermittent connections on the battery terminals. If there are wing nuts on the battery, whoever put them on damaged your 3 components. For years, Johnson and Evinrude specified lockwashers and hex nuts tightened with a wrench to fasten battery cables to the terminals, and to never use wing nuts even though they may come with a battery.

Seahorse: That message about not using wing nuts is hard to get across. Why marine batteries even come with them is beyond me. They can certainly cause an expensive repair.

Re: smoke from flywheel ?

i picked the motor up at night and thats when THEY hooked it up tilted it up and left as is over night, and few days later i tilted it down, leaked real bad and tilted it up, and then noticed it was smoking, and to be honest when i disconnect the battery to rig the boat i did not noticed if it was hooked up right or wrong,

would the tilt/trim work if it was crossed ?

Re: smoke from flywheel ?

If you jumped the battery positive to the blue wire to tilt up, and the positive to green to tilt down, then the battery is connected right. Other wise it would be backwards.

Think as the guys suggested, take it back and tell them what's wrong.

Re: smoke from flywheel ?

looks to be the retifier/regulator that went bad...

? is do you guy have constant power going to the selinoid ? is that the norm,

or do you guy switch the power on/off to the starting selinoid ? every time you go use the boat?

Re: smoke from flywheel ?

My boat has constant power to the big post on the starter solenoid. It doesn't hurt a thing.

c/6
Hooty
