If I understand correctly Smokercraft now also owns both Starcraft and Sylvan, both of which are also good boats.

RCS

Hi,
I reciently purchased a smokercraft/Sylvan 1982 ,open bow with windshield, it measures 14'.5" , my question is, weather it is concidered a 15' ? it dosen't look like a 14' with all the interior out of it ( am currently restroring it) it looks just like the 16' starcraft inside, obc rated for a 60 hp, I have not seen any other boat like this in the forums , or any where else for that matter, would appreciate any info on it ,it has Smokercraft & Sylvan on the placard , very well built and the dry climate has been good to it, I am replacing the transom, because of dry rot. I am replacing the old engine with a Honda 50, just the right size to pull behind our fifthwheel, any intrest or information would be appreciated , haven't figgured out how to get pictures in the forum yet, will post some when I can, best reguards---Sandy

Re: Smokercraft boats

The year I bought my Alumaweld, I looked at a Smokercraft at the Seattle boat show. A very nice looking well thought out design. Unfortunately, it was a West Coast design. It was not available from the dealers here in Florida. The models here are so much different, I did not buy one.

Not real clear to me why a boat that measures 14.5" would be considered 15'. It is what it is.

Smoker and Sylvan have been one company for many many years, they just aquired Starcraft last year and I am not sure if they boaught anything but the pontoon side.

They are a very very good boat, not as popular as a Lund but almost as good, I would give them a solid 9 too.

I would rate them alongside the Lund and Alumacrafts and I own a Lund.

Re: Smokercraft boats

As an aside, I was up in Minnesota for work last week... driving through Wisconsin and Minnesota I saw a ton of tinnies including new Lund's stacked up on their way to dealers. Crestliners, Lunds, Sylvans, Starcraft... lots more than ski type boats (although it was a bit nippy for swimming anyhow)

Not sure where your from, but MN and WI are solid fishing territories, and there are tons of fishing rigs around. However, there are equally as many other boats too. Our lake has just as many pontoon and run abouts as fishing rigs. I think MN has one of the highest, if not the highest rates of boat ownership per capita in the USA.

To stick somewhat to the original topic, not a lot of Smokercraft boats in my area- I see a few here and there, but it is a relatively rare brand around here. Lunds are very popular.

Smokers are high quality boats, not quite on the level of Lund, but close. It's like comparing a loaded Buick to a Cadillac. On a 1-10 scale, if Lund is a 10, then Smoker Craft would be a 9.5.

Interesting that the original question was asked in 2003........ answered in 2003.....then 7 years later in 2010 then again in 2012.

PLEASE refrain from answering OLD threads such as this other one too http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=314892

We usually like to leave these older threads as a reference in the archives to be read and not tampered with.

Thanks.
