It seems when I bought my boat, 2002 Smokercraft Stealth 162, in 2002, there was a lot of gossip about Smokercraft, Sylan and Starcraft merging or working together. I know Smokercraft bought Sylvan, but did they also have an arrangement with Starcraft? My brother-in-law purchased a Sylvan Offshore 2300 a few years earlier. Just after I bought my boat Sylvan discontinued the Offshore. When he asked his dealer about this, he was told that when Starcraft, Smokercraft and Sylvan merged, they decided to consolidate some models, and the Sylvan Offshore was very similar to the Starcraft Islander and was discontinued in order not to directly compete with the Islander. I seemed that some other models were discontinued or sold under different names by the different brands. It seemed that Smokercraft and Sylvan also started selling fiberglass models around this time. Did they purchase these models from Starcraft? I have heard rumors about a merger for years now but can find no information on it. Does anyone know the details relating to this?

Re: Smokercraft & Starcraft

I believe Smokercraft and Sylvan have always been owned by the same guy.
Just a premium line, and an economy line, if you will.
It also enabled him to have dealerships closer together, competing against one another, and he won, whichever dealer/brand made the sale.

Smokercraft and Sylvan have used the same po box (65) in New Paris IN, for years.

The following notation is found on the US Coast Guard MIC website:

"04/28/2001 UPDATED PER RNI. NOTE: STARCRAFT SHARES SOME RESOURCES WITH SMOKER/SYLVAN (SMK) & (SYL)."

Between the three companies, they are manufacturing boats under 9 or 10 different hull id's.

Thanks for the reply. If I understand correctly, they did not merge but share some suppliers and maybe share some of the basic hull designs. Is this so?

Can't tell for sure.

The Coast Guard site deals with the hull id codes, and the facilities they are made in, for identification and recall purposes.

It may be a merger deal.
Or it could be a contract for hulls of a certain type.
