A couple of weeks ago my boat exhaust(98 bayliner capri 1850se, 4.3L merc) started becoming a little smokey. It has gotten a little worse but not horrible. I imagine it is getting too much fuel. Symptoms are; white/grey very smelly exhaust, black carbon residue on the back of my hull, dry carboned spark plugs, oil seems to have gotten dirty (blacker) and the engine diesels (runs on) after running it hard and shutting down. What adjustments can be made on these carbs. The info I got with the boat says the carb is factory set and should not be adjusted. Is this true? I did start noticing the problem on vacation when I was buying all my gas from a marina in Canada. I ran about 150 gallons of it throught the boat. Could it have been bad gas? Would a bottle of Teckron, oil change and new plugs maybe fix things? Thanks.

Re: smokey exhaust

I hate to say it but from the description you give I doubt very seriously that a pint of "magic" oil can cure what ails your boat. I think you have something seriously wrong the white/grey smoke is a big clue. The white smoke usually comes from either pure engine oil burnig or steam from water being either run through combustion or boiling in the exhaust path somewhere. You need to do some serious diagnostic tests and take a more careful looks at the oil. Try running come compression tests and look carefully at all the plugs when you remove them.

I think if you just had a simple carb adjustment issue you would most likely see black smoke and a ver rough idle.

Good luck.
