I bought a 1971 Evinrude 60hp that has just been started for the first time in in about seven years. The thing smokes like a chimney, should I be worried?

Re: Smokin.........

How much oil are mixing with the gas? (Should be 50:1 gas to oil). Also, make sure the manual choke is not engaged.

Sometimes when 2 cycle engine sit for a long time when you start it and run it a first it will smoke alot it's because it burnning off old stuff in it. It should get better after you run it for a while.

Re: Smokin.........

Erictheboater,Beware that when an outboard sets out of use for an extended period that the waterpump impeller tends to take set if not deteriorate to a point where it will not pump sufficiently to cool engine.I would recommend a waterpump and T/stat replacement before engine is put to use. Also carb porting tends to accumulate gummy deposits that can cause either poor operation when put under load(in water) or even lean the fuel mix because of restrictions and cause cylinder damage.I would also strongly consider cleaning and or rebuilding the carbs along with replacing fuel filter.Good luck.
