I had a 1986 Johnson 110hp (J110TLCDC) No VRO , premix oil/gas 50-1 Smokes like a train pours white smoke and pure black goo seeping from lower unit. replaced all fuel lines no leaks did a decarb per Iboats forums. Let run on the muffs long time to see if it would stop after getting up to temp. nothing but white smoke. Did notice I could hold my fingers on the heads not hardly hot at all. Thanks You guys, John Mark. PS the outboard is new to me so don't have a history on her.

Muffs are for flushing the engine cooling system, that is all.
Testing is done in tank or at sea.
When doing the 'de-carb' did you run it under load?
When did you last change impeller and check/change thermostats?
If engine is 'new', do a basic service: impeller/wtr.pump, thermostats, link&synh, then you know where you are.

White smoke or steam?
If steam a pump capacity problem most likely.
Change impeller.

Re: Smoking 110hp

Powerheads will smoke slightly more if the engine is running cold. Check to see that the thermostats function properly-they may be stuck open, causing the engine to run cold at idle. You can check the powerhead temps with a laser temp gun. Should idle at 143-150. Even if they were the problem, that still may not explain all the smoke you say you have. Double check the oil ratio in the tank, possible the fuel in the tank was mixed with too much oil. Has the oil side of the fuel pump been disabled?

Not steam, white Smoke Motor is cool to the touch. Maybe too cool.I know two cycles smoke, but never seen one smoke this much. maybe after he runs it @ wot a while it will clear up. He bought the motor from me,I got a feeling he'll be calling with hey whats up with all this smoke.

Did the engine smoke when you owned it?
Maybe he mixed the fuel wrong

Re: Smoking 110hp

Was there white smoke before the decarb? I've had them put out a lot of white smoke right after doing one and the goo out of the prop would be normal too.

80 PSI would be low, and having them all the same would be very odd also, in fact I don't think I've ever checked a V4 that had the same comp on all 4.

Re: Smoking 110hp

Didnt have the motor long put on my 16 stoner skiff the 50hp I had on it was underpowered, the 110hp was overpowered, took and decarbed the 110hp from the get go after decarb ran her wot for about 6 gal.of fuel (6 gal.s went fast at wot) got it home was smoking while flushing and then when had her on the stand to run on the muffs to show buyer, hopefully its still pushing out the decarb, and will clear up there after. Great running motor . Sold as is , but I like to have happy buyers and just like to be ready incase I get that call. All that black goo coming out is more than likely from the decarb Too,and running her wot hopefully will clear it ,althoght Ive heard those 110hp are smokers and yes they do suck the fuel @ WOT. Thanks you guys, John Mark

Re: Smoking 110hp

My '87 110 doesn't smoke like that and I run it a little oil rich.
Chances are it's still blowing out the decarb.
Run a tank of fuel through it, at moderate speeds, and see what happens.

As for the operating temps, the starboard side bank, at idle, on muffs generally runs hotter than the port side on this vintage V4.
The 140 to 145 degree range is the normal range.

I would pull the heads and check for water intrusion. You can also check to see how effective the decarb was.
