Hi all, Tipsy here. Wondered if any of you have had a problem like this? I've got a 1975 Merc 888 in a 22' SeaRay SRV 220. 500 hours on the engine which was rebuilt about 10 years ago. Average about 50 hours a year. Well maintained, all lubes changed every year etc. Last season had the engine coupler replaced, early this season had all the bellows and gimbal bearing replaced. Also replaced the valve cover gaskets early this season too.
Problem is this, whenever I go cruising speed for fifteen minutes or so (marina to a local beach) after that period of time the engine starts to smoke a bit. Seems to be coming from the rear of the engine (thought it was the valve cover gaskets but turns out it wasn't). I can't get in the engine compartment close enough when it's hot to see exactly where it's coming from. I can motor around more slowly all day without this result. It only happens at higher speeds. Thought it might be a head gasket or worse but a compression check came out just fine. Today I pulled it from the river/marina and brought it home. Changed the o-ring in the reverse lock-out. Earlier in the year it had been leaking slightly. Wondered if maybe some of the trim fluid had been leaking down onto the engine and causing the smoking. So changed the o-ring and reassembled it. Sprayed it all down with degreaser and hosed it off. After it dries I'll have to go back in the water for a test run under a load in the river to see if that corrected it.
Any other ideas of what to look for?
Thanks!

Sounds just like a coupler, does it smell like oil or rubber.

Thanks for the reply! Smells like oily rubber! Sorry, they both kinda smell the same to me. Hate to think it's the coupler, last one lasted over ten years, just had this one changed in '06. Can't have 100 hours on it yet. What would cause it to do that so soon? Last shop that worked on my boat commented that whoever had done my previous work (which would be the coupler replacement) definitely had it lined up right. Both shops are highly reputable. But I hate to think of the cost to replace it again.

Thanks! I've been reading a lot of the other posts about engine couplers and it seems as though that's probably my problem. Sounds like even though it's new, something got out of line and is chewing up the coupler. Must have happened when the bellows were replaced this spring. Don't know if I should go back to that mechanic and try to get him to fix it or take it to one of the other shops in town.
Thanks again.

I'm also surprised about this because I'm assuming that this was caused by a bad gimbal bearing that was discovered when I had the bellows replaced. Would have thought the shop that discovered the bad bearing would have suggested looking at the engine coupler too. Oh well, learn something new every day.

Well the coupler really isn't something that you can really look at very well with the engine in the boat.....
Check the alignment yourself......
My guess is the rear motor mounts have a problem....
Were the mounts & shims replaced when the new coupler was?......
Couplers go bad for a reason, the first one was poor alignment.....
Sometimes you can get a bad replacement part right out of the box....
Get yourself an alignment tool & check yourself.....;)
