Smoking 85 Horsepower Outboard

I have a 1978 Johnson Javelin 85 HP outboard. Only had the boat a few months, but I have notice lately that it smokes (from the exhaust) a lot more that it used to, and what seems to be a lot more than most other two stroke engines on the lake. I am using 87 octane gas with a 50:1 mixture.

Am I using the correct mixture and gas?
Can smoking be an indication of a problem other than the wrong mixture?

Hope I have given enough info, and thank you in advance for your responses.

Have you decarbed the motor, that might make it smoke more for a little while. Also have you changed 2 cycle oil brands? If you haven't decarbed it, it might help out maybe, just taking a guess. 50 to 1 is correct on the mixture. I have the E'rude version same size motor same year. Also might be time for a tune up along with a decarb.

Also wanted to mention that it could be running to rich. These old 2 cycle outboards are going to smoke. Also pay attention to the color of the smoke.

Thanks, have not run a decarb..color of the smoke is whiteish. Just using penzoil 2 stroke. Could running rich be the reason there is a lot of oil accumulating on the boat around the engine area?

Are you saying the oil is accumulating around the splash well? How about under the cowling by the carbs?

I'm not sure that running rich would cause that or not honestly.

pardon my ignorance as I am new to this.... It accumulates oil in the area directly above the transum where waters splashes in and drains right out through the holes in the back. Also when the engine is tilted it actually drips the gooey mess, that is prabaly where the mess is coming from. It's kinda nasty.

I don't believe it is anything major. Yes the area you are talking about is a splash well. If you haven't tackled a carb rebuild on that motor I would do that. How does the motor run otherwise? Any skipping or popping or anything unusual? Is the engine easy to start and runs full throttle? I would also do a decarb which wouldn't hurt at all. Could be a matter of stopped up exaust port or carb also not letting the motor dispose of the oil like it should.

Lets look out for some other input from these other guys here, get some other opinions. May take a moment for someone else to chime in. My manual isn't near by at the moment.

Had Carbs done a few months ago. New plugs and fuel fitler at the same time as well. Not too bad to start. If it sits a few weeks it have to crank it 4 or 5 times. Runs at WOT without missing. No knocks, or anything strange at all. Engine seems pretty responsive too, even when I give it gas pretty quicly it comes right along.

The drain hose that runs from the intake manifold under the carburetors to the air silencer may be disconnected.

The smoking problem will be better when you replace the thermostats so that the engine is running at the correct temperature. The thermostat kit with everything you need is available from Iboats #18-3673.

Running synthetic oil will help. The Pennzoil synthetic blend TC-W3 oil is good, and so is their 100% synthetic which is biodegradable .

If you do the de-carbon treatment according to Capt. Dunkleberger's method, using three complete cycles, you should be rid of most of that carbon, which will help with the smoke. Afterwards add a carbon treatment like Carbon Guard to your gas regularly to keep it under control.

If you use BRP XD-50 oil, it has carbon treatment built-in.

Be sure to use QL77JC4 spark plugs.

What does this hose look like? I will take a look and see if it is connected. Oh and thank you buy the way......

It's just a small black hose but it gets left off when people put the carbs or air cover back on because it's easy to miss. It is usually left connected on the intake manifold and loose from the air cover -just slip it back on.

Go to the parts catalog for your motor and navigate to the intake manifold diagram: http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e

You will see the hose in the lower part of the diagram.
