Smoking a lot...normal for this engine?

I just acquired a nice little walkaround boat with a 2001 Johnson 115 Ocean Pro. I was out the other day my passengers were complaining about the fumes. I wouldn't usually notice because I'm used to the two stroke smell. When they did sort of complain to me about this, I kinda thought it wasn't usual as the fumes were coming into the cockpit while we were facing into the wind while underway.

Is there too much of an oil to fuel ratio and that's why there are a lot of fumes?

Can I adjust anything or does it sound like more deep than that where it would be something with the pistons and rings.

My thoughts, if it runs good and she is smokey, you know it is running good and getting oil

Yep.... I've always heard that you can tell when a 2-stroke engine is getting enough oil by when it's smoking.

One thing you might try is to see if a different brand of oil will give you either less smoke or else a less obnoxious smell. I can tell the difference between a couple of the name brands, one of them seems more irritating to me (I'd guess that it varies from one engine to another). Also, if you're using the VRO you might want to make sure that it's not over-oiling (but of course that problem is much preferred to not enough oil).

You are using the OMS oil injection, and not premixing oil with the fuel? If so, check the gasoline part of the fuel system for air leaks. If air leaks into the gasoline side of the system, the OMS pump will mix extra oil with the fuel that is there, causing lots of smoke.

Test the OMS system. Fill the oil reservoir and run 12 gal of gasoline thru her. Now see how much oil she takes to refill. It should be no more than 1 qt of oil.

Thank you all for your responses!

I am using the external oil injection tank, and I will try to see how much oil its using. I think thats a good place to start then I think I would try a different brand of oil if the latter doesn't work.

what brand of oil are you using? some will say "its all the same stuff" this is not true! you get what you pay for. buy cheap oils get cheap results. i would also recommend getting a portable tank and mix it 50:1 with the proper fittings. disconnect your oil line from your engine along with the fuel line and take it for a ride. this will tell you if your next step is to start looking for leaks in your fuel system or if your vro is over oiling. it will narrow down your results before you start digging into your engine. but the correct way would be as chris described.

Don't disconnect the oil line. If you do, you will need to bleed it.
