Smok'n! Tuned up outboard

I'm new to marine engines. I recently bought a used 1966, 6 hp Evinrude outboard and basically went through the process of replacing the water pump, changed lower gear lube, changed all coils, condensers, points, plugs, and rebuilt the carb. Compression on each cylinder is right at 90 psi - good. Stuck it in a full water tank and I started it up and it cranked after about three pulls, but it smokes white smoke like crazy. Lots of little oil droplets in the water. A buddy said this is normal and it will go away after I run it for awhile (hasn't been used in about three years). I just want to get a second opinion before I take it out on the water this weekend. Any advise is appreciated. This website is great! Thanks!

Im sure you are going to be fine! Did you fire it up in a barrel? Are you using the correct oil fuel mixture?

Yeah, I am using a 30-gallon trashcan full of water and the oil mix is 50:1. Followed the manual step-by-step as well as getting lots of advise from this website. I've tried to cover all the bases before cranking this thing up so that I don't damage it.

It always looks way worse in a barrel. It all collects in there. Plus you'll be burning off the oil you used during assembly.<br />Running rich usually makes lots of smoke. If your confident you set the float in the carb properly, I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt you are anyway; you probably would have mentioned the gas smell.

Thats why I asked if you started it in a barrel, it always looks ten times worse when you do that!
