Smoother ride?

Am I going to get a smoother ride from my 87 24' Dorel Tara V6 cobra outdrive 3 blade 14-15 prop if I either change the prop/pitch and or add the dolfins to out drive? (I'm also thinking of using a trolling plate) I want to use this boat for Lake Erie walleye, lake trout and samon fishing. Thus I would need a variety of trolling speeds. Can somebody please help me  figure this out?

Re: Smoother ride?

You might get more bite (sorry..;)) by posting this in the prop forum.

Having said that I guess you need to define "smoother" for us. You mean less vibration? Different speed? Softer ride?

I'm no expert but I've not experienced a change in "smoothness" as I understand it by changing prop pitch. You will affect hole shot, acceleration, top end speed, etc., etc., but the rest is down to your hull design and environmental conditions. The whale tale issue is a hot debate all on its own with respect to gains or losses in ride and handling.

Maybe just clarify a bit.

Re: Smoother ride?

If you have an aluminum prop you will smooth it out a bit with a stainless steel prop because the heavier propeller has more of a flywheel affect on the driveline. Not much difference.
A hydrofoil will not give you a smoother ride than just trimming the boat correctly, so no big change there. The foils can smooth out the ride in a storm by allowing you to keep the nose down at slower speeds, but they don't help for normal operation with getting a smoother ride.

You're right about there being "not much difference" with a steel prop smoothing it out due to flywheel effect. You won't see any difference at all because it's so small. Kind of like saying that steel wheels will make your car run smoother because they're heavier than aluminum wheels.

Re: Smoother ride?

And yet on a Merc 470 putting on a steel 3 blade prop meant less driveline vibration in the boat than the old 3 blade had. Well, at least in my case.
So from empirical evidence I'll stick with my statement. Now, that motor is more of a shaker than most so I'd think it would be less on a newer V8

Oh, and steel wheels that are heavier will make your ride worse because it affects the sprung/unsprung weight ratio and move the car around more. But putting on a lighter flywheel will create more driveline vibration felt in the chassis. :)
