Replacing my gimbal bearing and all that goes with it. I have an older style outdrive and a 165 hp I6. Now I am having problems with a snap ring holding the old bearing in. Will spin around but can't get it out. Any ideas? I am afraid I will break the darn thing.

Re: Snap ring

Just break it out ,remove the older bearing, plastic collar, shim stock and update to the newer style bearing. use the correct tool for installation.

Re: Snap ring

as bd says, that snap ring isn't any more necessary than the o ring at the top of the lower drive shaft. ya can leave it off. with that said. i put mine back where i found it.
how i did it was going down to harbor freight for some cheapo chinse extra long needle nose pliers.
like this.

then i cut a groove in the tip and made them into snap ring pliers. this worked very well. somewhere between 10-15 bucks i think for a set of three extra long nose pliers. i'll likely never need them, but if it do, i got some i guess.

I just love a man who's not afraid to modify a tool to get the job done right... :D :D :D

More people should follow the 'Ziggy' way.... I have so many bent spanners, and 'cut and weld' tools it would horrify a tool salesman. I once made a 9cm cookie cutter with from a thin sheet of plate and welded the ends together for a cooking requirement.... :D I have a pair of multi-grips with short lengths of a 1/4" bolt welded to the jaws for opening a SCUBA regulator (annual service tool that one!), and a pair of long nose pliers ground so I can replace the battery on my dive computer (saving over $60 per year the dealer wants to rip me off!).

I like the look of those pliars. The ones I have are too small and you would need to have hands of steel to use them. I thing I have an old pair like that in one of my old tool boxes. Use grinder I wonder or Dremell.
