I have a 69-70 Mrec 500 that I'm in the process of rebuilding the lower unit.
My question is, which is the correct way to install the shift cam in the lower unit. I know how it came out when I dissasembled it, but I'm not sure it was installed correctly the last time it was servised. The cam rotates horizontally, but can be installed two different ways (with the cam lobes on the left, or right as you look from the back with the skeg facing down). The manual is not detailed enough to show this.
The manual says to install the shift cam with the notches facing up, and to the left when seen from the skeg (the cam works to the right on all models). ?????
