my 17.5 bowrider I/O is coming together nicely. I have replaced stringers, transom and floor, holes are cut in the transom and sealed with resin and I'm doing the last of the glassing of the floor in the next couple of days. The motor is prepped and on the hoist, ready to go in.

Now, I have to paint. I did a search and there are lots of options that seem to work for different folks but one thing I could not find a definitive answer on.....is this...

I have been using unwaxed poly resin for my glass work. final layer is chopped strand mat all over the inside. I plan to use garage floor paint on my glasswork. (this is a family runabout, not a museum piece restoration) so,

Can I just paint over the unwaxed resin, or does it need to be sanded? Either way, should the resin cure for a certain amount of time before painting, or would 24 hours be long enough?

Any surface that is going to be painted should be at the very least lightly sanded. It helps the paint to grip the surface. Check the label of the resin you are using. It should have the full cure time listed. If not call the manufacturer they can tell you. I would wait until the resin is fully cured before sanding and painting. I am planning on painting the floor of my boat also. Carpet is a pain for a family cruiser. What ever paint you use get the type with the non-slip granules. That way people in your boat won't slip when the floor is wet.

yes sanding is required.. scuff the shine off it.. an wash down with 50/50 ammonia an water..

this is the best wax killer..

also.. why not use marine paint..?? all that work an use an experiment,, don't make sense..

also,, do a RED SEARCH.. at top of this page..

type in " K & S tubing".. an my number 6309 at the bottom..

very pertinet to your project..keep your transom from rotting out..

Gel coat will work well over the mat finish floor and may not need as much sanding to bond well if the resin has no wax in it. The surface of resin does not cure completely if wax is not added ( as you know), so if that uncured layer is not sanded off it can cause problems with paints bonding to it.
