We took out our "baby boat", our 16' '90 Quantum fishing boat with a Force 50hp OB, yesterday morning for some fishing on Clark's Hill (sometimes called Strom Thermond Lake.....but not by old timers, dammit!!!)
During our brief ownership of "baby boat", it has so far been a very nice experience. Got it for mega cheap and it's been almost trouble free, amazingly enough considering some of the sentiment expressed in places about Bayliner built boats and Force OB's.
Until yesterday, the motor cranks up first or second try after trailering, first try after that start. But yesterday, a different story. Took a few starts to get it running and it was running sort of ragged....but nothing terrible and I thought it may have been some bad gas (bought the tank of gas from a different retailer than I usually do as we were up there at 5AM and our normal gas station was closed then.)
We cruise across the lake from our launch point.....begin fishing but I now smell gas.....a lot of gas. Look behind the boat, see a sheen of gas on the water.
Damn! But I don't see where the gas is from, so we decide to go back to the dock and trailer her. Cannot do anything on the water.
It's running worse and WOT speed is down by almost 5 mph from normal.
Trailer the boat, pull out and take a look. Gas is pouring out from the lower cover of the motor. Pull off the motor's upper cover and discover this sitting in the bottom of the motor's lower cover:
And the carb looks like this:
Honestly, I've not seen a fuel bowl fall off a carb before. And I'm also surprised that the motor even managed to run, much less do 26mph, albeit while running like it had water in the gas.
I did check, after getting home, the threads inside the carb where the bowl's bolt screws into.....and the threads are intact, as are the bowl's bolt's threads. Guess it just loosened up.....
So maybe this was just the boat wanting the carb to be rebuilt, something I was planning on doing in December. Suppose sooner is better than later.
So, how's your weekend going?
