So i installed a tatle tail on my 88 force 85 hp, but...

I bought the boat cheap with out it started and got it started, noticed there was no water coming out the exhaust. I did a little reseach and saw the force outboards usualy have some type of issue on ears with water flow overboard so i installed a tatle tail with the guidance of the forum. I dont have any water even out the thermostat housing and after its warmed up a little amount of smoke comes out, not really under pressure and it doesnt smell like the impeller burning up. my thought process is to replace the impeller and hope for the best, is the small trace of smoke coming out the tatle tail mean i should do a compression test as well? Thanks in advance, you guys never let me down with research and comments.

Find a tank to fill and submerge the lower unit at least up to the cavation plate and over the exhaust snout while running it. ( I don't even bother with the ears.)
Still no water after 5-10 seconds, check and replace the impeller (YOU SHOULD REPLACE THE IMPELLER ANYWAY ON A MOTOR YOU JUST BOUGHT), check the water tube for correct installation or blockage (INSECTS LOVE TO NEST IN BOAT MOTORS).
Has the motor been ran in salt water? Check for corrosion, after removal of the LU, force water thru the copper water tube with a garden hose.
Yes, do a compression test. This will tell the health of the motor.

The water needs to be 2-4 inches OVER the cavitation plate.
Using muffs: I duct tape them in place if I even think the flow might be off.
Don't try to tape em in place after the drives gotten wet, won't work!
Like Greg suggests do a compression test.
Since it starts and starts without too much work it's probably ok.
Your motor, most of the water/exhaust should come out the snout on the gear housing.
The holes in the back are for the PRV. There might be water coming from there? might not.
My twin 88/85s both shoot water out the mid section as soon as the water gets circulating.
My PRV's both are frozen in place. Not a big deal.
Hey Greg,hows the boat running??

I used a large cooler and sumberged it with no water flow, i also blew through the tatle tail and saw bubbles coming out the suction of the lower unit leads me to believe theres no more vains on the impeller. I have to go to the store and get the right allen key to drop this lower unit since theres a bolt on the exhaust snout with one. come to find out theres no overheat alarm hooked up which is scaring me about how many times did they possibly overheat this engine if any.

Not sure what boat you have or the controls.
Some Chrysler controls had a buzzer in them?
Most NO.
You should have a horn or a buzzer under the dash.
Turn key on and ground out the orange lead on the side of the motor.
There a sending unit on the motor?Again an Orange lead coming off the head.

i followed the temp sensor (orange) in to the wiring harness up to the console and found a cut orange wire with no buzzer underneath the console, so i ordered a 3vdc-12vdc buzzer off amazon to install.

After discovering what you did, I would definitely do a compression check just to settle any curiosities.

Have you looked under the dash for a horn or buzzer (a buzzer maybe harder to recognize). I have heard some mention an ?instrument panel over heating light?. I have a horn button on my 1970, 35hp Chrysler. I knew the horn worked at my 1985 purchase and that it served as the overheating warning also from testing.

Years later I noticed no horn basically as a pre trip test for good Batt connections (since I had electric start but no charging and charged after 3-4 trips). I knew with no horn I had no over heating warning and investigated to find a horn (weathered/rusted). A new 12V auto horn is still ?Beeping? about 10 yrs later as a horn or over heating warning.

I see your buzzer note just before I posted my horn info. I would test the temp sending unit with boiling water (as an open switch that closes in hot water with a meter, Etc.).

Jerry,
You should be able to see me grinning like a jack-*** eating briers, all the way down in Fla!
This thing sounds and runs like a finely tuned sewing machine. I will be sending you a complete season end update soon!

People, don't give up on your Force motors. They CAN be made to run very well. (unless you can afford to sink 5-6K into something else from 1995 that will require repairs also)

Changed out the impeller and it worked, tatle tail works wonders and the force engine is a champ. Thanks for all the input!!

What were the compression test results, temp sensor test and temp buzzer install/test?

Those who don't know why I asked Greg how the motors running? I rebuilt his power head earlier this year. Just wanted to see if it's still good.

Force 125 Smooth Running Rebuild - YouTube
First time uploading to youtube, I think I deleted the other video.
Just had to post it again.
Thanks for the compliments!
And thanks to everyone on this forum who helped me thru the entire rebuild process (especially jerry)
(now the 6 month wait to run it again, crap...)
