So I smoked it....now what?

Alright so I learned a valuable lesson...dont rev a boat motor without a load. Knew it wasn't good for any vehicle but damn I did it once and there goes a bearing....seems to me it was on its way out anyways, but regardless.

Anyways now I'm in a predicament. I was given this boat. 1993 Maxum bowrider. Interior is nice, white leather, red trim.... Hull is in GREAT shape, no cracking, chips or anything.

So do i spend the 1400 on a used motor? Ive already had this one out and it was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be.

The other prob is the stern drive seems to be leaking water into the gear oil a little bit.

Let me also say that the boat was free and I cannot afford a new boat. So do I fix this with a used motor or walk away?

Ayuh,.... What sterndrive,..?? What motor,..??

This is the Motors,+ I/O forum,... We don't care what the hull is.....

Re: So I smoked it....now what?

Ok sorry. I recently posted a thread about revving my mercruiser 3.0 apperently to high and killed it. Sounds like a bearing. Its a 3.0L with an Alpha One gen 2. The Alpha is leaking water into the gear oil and the engine appears to have a bad bearing now. So I was asking what you all might do? Replace the engine (since this is an engine specific forum), fix the water leak or walk away from a boat thats 16 years old. So I would only imagine that what the rest of the boats condition would play a big factor in this decision, that is why I told everyone its a Maxum bowrider with a great hull and decent interior. So what would you guys do?

Hey an actual constructive comment. Thanks.

If I may...
Bond-O's comment was in fact constructive, not only constructive but conducive to getting you a correct evaluation / answer to your problem..It got you off the bench and told us what type of motor/OD you were talking about....

Someone posts one comment of what you want to hear and you get all giddy...

For all we know you may have burned up an old OMC motor drive combo and the answer would be to find a cliff...a great big high cliff and launch her off of it....

btw
Welcome aboard

I'm not sure I would go with a used engine. You could probably get that engine rebuilt at a reputable local machine shop for not a lot more.

I replaced a 3.0L engine last summer for a friend who didn't get all the water out his block (which cracked)

He got the a long block from US Engines in Kent, Wa.

While the engine they supplied was pretty nice, I think I could have taken the engine to a local shop who would have had the block either replaced or welded and probably could have matched or bettered the US engines deal. ( they took the core and said they would have it repaired)

In either case your rebuild will probably include either grinding your crank undersize or replacing it.

Getting a used engine could put you in the same boat(sic) you're in now...

The drive will need to be pressure checked and resealed probably..... You can also buy a new SEI drive and that with the rebuilt engine will give you a nice running, fuel efficient boat that will be largely trouble free for a LOT of years.

Re: So I smoked it....now what?

Since you think this is a bearing, what did the oil pressure gauge tell you when it began knocking. Or did it actually toss a rod through the side of the block. If all it did was take out a rod or main bearing, have the crank rebuilt, plastigague a new set of bearings and put the engine back in. Because you screwed up the bottom end doesn't mean you trashed the top end. But you need to determine exactly what damage you did do and base your decision on what to do on that information.

Pul drive and check ujoints. With drive off run motor. Rig water to engine though first. That way you can tell if it is the engine or drive. Then you can go from there.

I dont see how revving it without a load would toss a bearing. From my understanding of internal combustion engines wouldnt you have to exceed the recommended rpm's to do that. You can rev motors all day long in neutral as long as theres oil, a cooling source and you dont exceed the spec. Im with the poster above me. Unless you tell us why you think you toasted the motor, it maybe something in the outdrive.

his other post said he ran it up to 4000rpm on the hose.

He didnt say the temp got hot. How is running it on the hose without getting hot hurting anything.

Re: So I smoked it....now what?

Ran it to 4000 with just muffs on (had no idea it was a catastrophic thing to do). Temp was perfectly fine and so was oil pressure. At 4000 RPM is started vibrating and making noises...hard to descirbe...like something internally was loose...like a bearing.......now it does it anything beyond idle. I dont know for sure what it is...I just suspect a bearing. I like the idea of taking out the drive and running a hose straight to the motor and seeing if it is for sure the engine, although it sure does sound like it is.

I'm curious also. What is the recommended rpm range for that engine? Why was he even revving it up that high? Why did he get offended by Bondo's reply? Why ask why?

When you ran it when drive was hooked up to muffs was the drive down or all the way up?

Yea, if it was running up, you might have problem with the gimble ring/u-joints?

All and all, I just spent the money on an 89 to rebuild it. I would do it for a 93 in great condition...

Re: So I smoked it....now what?

Why I was revving it? Well I had no idea it was highly recommended you dont. I know its never good to do in excess but it was only for a second like when you rev a car engine briefly. Stupid? Obviously it was at this point, I have no problem admitting that.

The history goes that I had to take the engine out to replace the rusted out flywheel. Its been sitting for a few years and only started a few times this spring. Boat ran fine before just had a hard time starting it cause some of the teeth were chewed up. So out came the engine, replaced plugs, oil and of course the flywheel and all gaskets on the drive. I didnt use an alignment tool simply because i was told if you un-bolt the front of the engine right from the fiberglass you dont need to use the tool when re-installing. Im new to working on these boats.I think that was bad advise. So anyways after the engine went back in and the drive unit(not as smooth as a whistle) it ran great...started first turn of the key. Ran off and on for about a half hour making sure it went into forward and reverse etc. Then when I was opening it up a bit(now I know BAD IDEA) the vibrating internal engine noise started at the hig RPM then when I brought it down to idle went away...then started back up and it was there. As far as the unit...i dont think it was up, I had just got done checking the gear oil so it was down far enough to do that but it was up enough that the prop wasnt touching the ground. When I run the engine a bit now at idle the sound gets worse when the trim is all the way up but its awful at any trim level and obviously get worse with even a pinch of throttle. Of course I hope I damaged a gimbal bearing or something by not aligning it...anythings better than internal engine problems but it def sounds like its coming from inside the engine.
