......and since it was free it has issues. It's a Baretta Supersport 185 with a Volvo Penta 275. Motor supposedly runs, I havent fired it up. Some serious cracks as you can see in the pictures. My question is, is this fixable? I'm thinking no, but you never know. Is it is fixable, how would I go about this? I'm a big "do it yourselfer", and believe the boat will clean up nicely. The thing I'm not sure about is those cracks. Anyone have any input? Thanks.

OHHH yea that one is going to be a lot of work !!! we will help all we can !!! transom . stringers , lot of glass work , and like oops said when she will be done You will have the biggest grin !!!! glass , resin or epoxy , wood , prob about 1000 ,

I would check and see if the motor is worth it ?? check the comprision on her !! if that good then you petty good to go !! if not a new motor at leat 3 or 4 grand !! then it might not be worth it !!!

So welcome this is a great place to learn and do !! So of the greatest people on the plant are right here in these forms !! John

Thats a cluster, I would go over the drive and motor very carefully with a eye towards bent or cracked parts. the glass can be fixed but if the motor or drive is too far gone it may not be worth the effort. There is no such thing as a free boat.

I think that's an excellent picture of what happens when you run a boat with a rotten transom into an obstruction. We should save a copy to show newbies what it looks like.

The good news: It's fixable. Check over the rest of the boat to see what condition the drive, engine, controls, fuel tank, and mechanicals are in. The volvo penta drive is about as good as sterndrives get. It's probably still functional even after that hit it took. Quality stuff. It will likely need maintenance though - check the engine and sterndrive oil for water first.

The bad news: If the transom was that far gone, I'd bet you're gonna need new stringers, deck... the full monty. A lot of work, and frankly not terribly cheap.

But, it would make a decent project even with all that. It looks nice, and if the mechanicals are in good shape I'd say go for it.

On the other hand, pretty soon there are gonna be a lot of boats for sale with cracked engines and bad drives... if yours are good, swapping them to a new boat hull might get you on the water quickly.

I wish someone would give me a boat like that :)

Marine...Before you spend one dime, check compression on motor, then , using a screwdriver poke around floor ( fiberglass) in stern area, your looking for rotten wood under the fiberglass, then remove all the seats / cushions ect, everything thats removable, and keep checking for rot. If everything is solid, then the motor and outdrive has to be removed to start repairs....figure on all new everything,My Friend, figure on anywhere from 3 - 8k to restore her depending on engine.........keep us posted.
