5.7 of unknown year appears to be GM 350, Serial number A485483,as printed on a label on the starboard valve cover. He says when he put it in gear there was no drive, and smoke coming from rear of motor near drive shaft.

I noticed the starboard motor mount bushing is pretty much gone and the seal around the gimbal housing appears to have shifted down by as much as 3/16".

what should we be looking for besides the obvious motor mount bushing? I could not read the serial number on the outdrive, i took a picture with my phone but...i can't get it on my laptop.

Judging by where the smoke is coming from it sounds like you may need a new coupler. Pull the drive and do an inspection.

Just reread your post. You said he put it in gear and it had no drive. Do you mean it did'nt go into gear or the boat has no drive on it?

You have a lot of problems. Rear mounts probably caused the couplers rubber hub to break loose. (the smoke)
They usually don't start smoking till you start going faster. If it did it at idle I would be pulling the drive and see if the ujoints and gimbal bearing have problems. Also drain the gear lube from the drive and check for water in the oil and metal on the drain screw magnet.
You have a very expensive problem going on.

This a merc? What drive ? What year is the boat?

The coupler went cause the motor dropped taking the gimbal bearing and who knows what else.

Drive off, motor out, new coupler, then depends on what else happened cause maybe the stringers

that the motor mounts to is bad causing the motor to drop taking the motor mount.

Like Don s said it ain't gonna be cheap.

Or another bad thing could have happened the drive dropped cause the transom is rotten taking the gimbal bearing putting stress on the coupler taking that and lifting the motor up and taking the motor mount.

Ether way like i posted in the first paragraph, they have to be pulled.

Good luck let us know what happened. One other thing this has 2 motors this boat ? You know what happened to one is just a matter of time is gonna happen to the other.

Re: So my boss has this boat....

Yeah, thanks for the replies guys, I know next to nothing about his boat or history, he hit me up in the office yesterday cause he knows I mess with my boat. Basically what I tried to explain above is what he told me. I thought i would bounce it off you guys and as always you guys have good thought provoking ideas.;) We are gonna take a look at it this weekend...I helped the boat mechanic out with some lot clearing for just the cost of the fuel, it was the boss mans equipment so he kinda owes him at least a good look...we shall see, keep you updated.....
