I just had our 1999 38ft Carver Santego soda blasted this past winter and I'm gearing up for painting the bottom with Interlux Micron CSC. The paint that was removed did not have good adhesion and I think the wax was not removed. Do I have to worry about wax residue still on the hull after the soda blasting? Looking for advice on what I need to do for preping the hull before painting.

Whether the soda took the wax off or not I would follow good general painting prep. Wipe down the entire area with clean clothes soaked in whatever type of thinner - reducer your paint uses.. Just turning the boat over could leave finder prints and oils all over the surface.

I did have at one time a spray can of painting prep solution that I got for repainting a car that would take wax, etc off before you paint.

Re: Soda Blasting

hello Drink..

Soda blasting is kinda new to some areas..but rest assured you bottom is fairly clean.. have your guys Prep the chines and Strakes m8..

after its prepped right...and cleaned 3 times with acetone.. barrier with InterProtect 2001.....and hot coat some VC on it...unless you really are sold on CSC ( which is VERY good paint )

38 footer...mostly in water all season..I would barrier coat it..im not sure if CSC can be hot coated ( coating without sanding ) but I will check my book on that ).

Nice Yacht you have..do it once m8..

YD.

but why are you choosing CSC ?

I'm not set on the CSC and also thinking using Bottomkote. I talked to my marina today and they said to wash with 50/50 vinegar & water and then wash with Interlux 202.

Re: Soda Blasting

Drink, You will want to use an ablative antifouling paint. It is much better paint since buildup is non-existant and the paint is multi season. If the soda blasting took off any gel coat, you probably should prime the boat with some high-build epoxy primer(barrier coat). The Pettit version only takes three coats, while other brands take up to six. There is also Pettit Sandless primer, which is not a barrior coat, but is an excellent primer for bottom paint, if the gelcoat is intact.8)
