Soft Scrub for Deck Cleaning !?

A few days ago I gave my B28's fiberglass decks a good cleaning with Soft Scrub w/ bleach. I brushed it in thoroughly and let it soak a few minutes before rinsing.

Returning to the boat today the difference was noticable! I'm thinking a few more cleanings will clean and brighten the decks considerably. But I'm wondering if I need to worry about the "soft" scrub's abrasiveness, I'm also curious how the 3M non-skid deck cleaner's performance would compare.

I used it on a sailboat I had. Did a great job. Then I waxed it. That turned yellow. Had to Soft Scrub it all over again. Wait a good week or two before applying wax. The chemicals need to dissipate.

IMHO, softscrub is too abrasive. I'm sure it would create a good visual improvement under certain conditions but you'd be better off with a more mild/fine abrasive. The rougher you make the surface the quicker stuff will cling to it.

softscrub works great, especially on nonskid. i wouldn't be too worried about the abrasion, but rather the bleach. could wreck your fittings down the road. i would only use it 2-3 times a season, and made sure i really rinsed it off well.

you can also get softscrub without bleach, but it doesn't work as well. it's the bleach that is cleaning things up.

I agree that Softscrub might be a little too abrasive. It seems like it would remove any protective finish. Clorox has a tendency to yellow things in the sun. Since our deck is all diamond, we don't wax it. Not to mention how slippery it could make it.

We use StarBrite deck cleaner and it works better than anything else we've tried and highly recommend it. For the really bad areas and bow rail we use Bar Keepers Friend which is a very mild abrasive meant for stainless steel. :)

I second the StarBrite suggestion. And stay away from chlorine bleach on the boat.

I was amazed at how well the Starbrite deck cleaner worked. I'm a natural skeptic, but I did a double take when I hosed it off. Blinded by the white!

Which Starbrite product gives the great results? I searched at defender.com and saw a hull cleaner, a "wash and wax"
We use both. Deck Cleaner for the deck only and the Boat Wash for the rest of the boat. Simple Green is a good boat wash also, but you just can't beat Star Brite products.

Sounds like some good choices except for the simple green.I use Simple green in my bilge and for an oil spill cleanup but it is a little harsh for the topside or gelcoat. When I use a hull wash product it is usually car wash n wax.It cleans without stripping the wax from the gelcoat or topside.Charlie
