I've been going to post this for a long time.
i was having a little trouble with the aged garden tractor battery in my lawn tractor losing charge over storage in the summer when cutting the yard slows and over winter (north east). So figured try one of those 1/4 watt solor maintainer.
I think this is batteries 5th summer. In the summer it is shaded a lot by a tree but doesn't need much to stay alive.
It holds over the winter just fine starting fine with no boost or fiddling in the spring.
The panel is hung on a couple of screws propped toward the sun pretty much exposed to all weather.
I replaced the wire plugin end with a couple of small charger clips. I know its doing the job because I forgot to hook up a couple of times and it tried but couldn't crank. And that was in the summer when cutting wasn't needed much, not winter.

Re: Solar charger

I have a small panel mounted in the window of my shed. Since my tractor has an accessory socket, I rigged a harness that allows the solar panel to plug into that socket for maintaining the tractor battery. I also have a 12 volt light rigged up in the shed that is powered from that same harness. So not only does the tractor battery stay charged, I also have a light which helps avoid tripping over stuff should I need to be in there at night.

I hook mine up with a cigar lighter. I just installed a socket under teh seat of my tractor and when I am done mowing, i just park and plug the charger in.

Re: Solar charger

Solar chargers are great for keeping a battery up. Newer technology is the pulse charge systems. I have seen solar panel, pulse chargers for about 100 dollars. The pulse technology breaks up sulfates in the lead structure. This restores the capicity of the plates in the battery and extends its useful life.
I work with Porsches, people frequently keep them in the garage more than they drive them. Recently I changed out a ten year old battery which still showed the same cold cranking amps as the rating sticker in testing. Owner wanted a new battery because he had never seen one last that long. The army is using this technology on equipment in long term storage, it is saving us millions of dollars a year in batteries which were previously failing at 3 to 4 years of disuse.

Re: Solar charger

I see this solar powered battery charger on suntekstore, but are there any other better options? Like waterproof or made more specifically for our IncS with micro-usb.
