Well I finally got rid of my boat today after a month of storing it for the kid. I recieved payment 1 month ago I live in florida he lives in md so today he finally pics it up. The boat is a checkmate zt 240 loa 25' the dry weight on the boat is 3700lbs so he shows up to my house in a 6cyl explorer! I say to him your going to tow that boat with that suv back to baltimore he said yeh why I look at him like  so it gets better he ask me to show him where the local ramp is him and his buddy want to take it out so I say ok. We get to the ramp and he now says how do I back this up well come to find out he never owned a boat before, I have boating all my life. so I give him a quick boating 101. Well we are not on some little inland lake I am right on the gulf of mexico so he wants to go into the gulf so I say are you sure you want to go in the gulf it is kind of rough today 5 footers with a strong sw wind 15-25 knots he says I want to go fast! ok first of all he has never owned a boat 2. he has no clue what he is up against with te gulf. 3 just getting out of the jetty on a average day is pretty hard for a new boater not to mention a day like today. 4 he had only life jackets on the no flare gun ship to shore all i had in that boat was a handheld and i did not give it to him no throwables whistle he tells me if anything happens he's got a cell phone. 4 that kind of power. He does have insurance though because I made him fax me a copy of his policy while the boat was in my driveway if anything happens I would not be responsible. I could not stop him it is his boat it is just scary a 25 year old kid with a boat that will run 76mph (it has a 496 ho) with no experience. I just hope nothing happens to him. all I know it will be a rough ride home for him if he makes it. He also asked how hard it was to get it back on the trailer  I wanted to stay and see how he was going to get that boat back out of the water with that explorer! I have a 3/4 ton hemi and getting that boat out of that ramp with my truck would give me problems sometimes it is steep and slippery but if I had trouble i would put it in 4wd. When he was driving away down the intercoastal I was telling him to put the outdrive down and he was waving by so I am sure when he went to get on plane he had a shocker probably thought the boat was broke. I know the local water policeman and we where talking about him and we just chuckled but again it is scary that this goes on everywhere I know you have to learn somewhere but in that kind of boat:eek: But what was I going to do refuse his money cause he is a new boater no way i dont need 3 boats and besides I love cash!;) well I thought I would share my scary but humorous story!

If he survives the test ride in the boat he still has a heck of a white knuckled drive back to Baltimore...Geeze! If the Explorer even makes it with that load.
What a dummy!

Yikes. Not very smart on the new guy. Could you imagine two of him on the same day, same water, with the same attitude?

Oh boy...

Wonder if he is using the bumper for the hitch? That scares the daylights out of me,,,,,,,Bent the bumper down on my wifes Explorer with a 1500# trailer/load.

no it was not the bumper hitch! The truck and the trailer where almost dragging on the ground. I told him to take the spare tire off cause if he hit a big bump it would rub on the ground!

My 6 cylinder Explorer did not have disc brakes on the rear wheels. Being able to stop is just important as having the power to tow.

The trailer has disc breaks on my truck I know it stopped really well. I also told him when and if he gets home to check the breaks on the trailer after that ride!

I also have a 6cyl explorer and a 19' regal sebring I used it the other day to move it just around the block and I could tell it was there big time. not to mention his explorer had 117,000 on it. I look at it like this your going to spend 35,000 on a boat you can obviously afford a truck to tow it with! I would not even attempt to pull that boat with that setup. but thats just me some people are different. also he did not even have a jack or a 4 way with him I felt bad and gave him both!
