I have a 1978 Mercruiser 140, it has the different type of solenoid that isn't like in the wiring diagrams in my manual. I is the one as seen in this pic as num,ber 36A http://www.boatfix.com/mercag/parts1.asp?partno=1586&block=0&img=CRUISER/68573/WIRE.pdf

Does anyone know what the pinouts are on it as they have no markings.......does it even matter as long as the large and small connections are seperated?

Help please I am trying to get my newly rebuilt engine started today.

Re: Solenoid Pinout??

Well, now that we know what kind of solenoid you DON'T have, can you post a picture of one like you do have?
What is this solenoid for start, or trim.
Is it one like pictured here.

Sorry Don, I edited my first post, what I meant to say was that it isn't like the on in my manual. It is the one in the pic mentioned above, non-traditional type.

I guess the first question is what kind of solenoid do you have. A lot of them look the same, but work different.
Do you have a PN for the one you bought? and What brand, like Sierra, Arco, Mallory, etc.

Re: Solenoid Pinout??

If it's internally like the one shown in your manual, the big wires and little wires should do the same thing.

Re: Solenoid Pinout??

The solenoid is the slave starter solenoid I believe, it looks the same as the one I posted above in the link (#36A - PN 89 853654A 1, not #36 which is the traditional looking solenoid).

This one here...

I did not buy it as it came with the bell housing/motor I just bought. Unfortunately the solenoid has no pin identifactions on it like other solenoids I have seen. Internal/External, how do you know the difference?

Re: Solenoid Pinout??

Check the small terminals, see if there is an I by one and an S by the other. If there is, you want to put the Start wire (Yellow/red) from the ignition switch to the S terminal. Ground will be through the base, and the I terminal will not be used.
If there are no letters, one of the small terminals will be yellow/red from the switch, the other will be ground. When the key is turned to the start position you should here the relay click.
On either type, the red/purple wire goes to one of the big terminals, the yellow red wire going to the start terminal on the starter solenoid.
