I have a 1985 Johnson 25 horse, model j25elcoc. 2 cylinders.I need to change out the solenoid. the numbers on the back of the old one are f-1900-m. when I try to look up a new solenoid I an told that the numbers need to be 582708, 395419 . can anybody let me know what the proper numbers are that I need to look up?

Thank you,
newbie with a lot of questions.

Re: solenoid question

Just be sure that it is in fact a solenoid that is the problem. They are often blamed for a no start scenario, when in fact the problem lies elsewhere.

Re: solenoid question

the solonoid is pretty trashed. One of the post has the threads striped off, and the other post looks as if the base of it is cut in half. I did check the starter out by jumping it with the battery, and it worked fine. I am replacing the battery cables as well, the look like crap.

If there is anytheing else that I should look at by all means let me know. All advice is welcome.

Thanks,
Pat

Re: solenoid question

Be sure to replace any wiring with nicks, cuts, abrasions, or crunching when you flex it. Also be sure to file all connections then re tighten. This includes the grounds, battery wiring, starter and solenoid wiring.

Re: solenoid question

just wanted to say thanks for all the input. Everything was helpful. I put the new solenoid and new battery cables in, and everything works great. Had the boat on the water last night. It ran great.

Thank you,
Pat
