What is the difference between a slave solenoid and starter solenoid? I have a 1986 mercury 90 hp inline6, do i have both on this motor? And how does the battery charge? Thank for the help

Re: solenoid question

That motor will not have a slave solenoid. It has just a starter solenoid, located on the lower starboard side of the motor.

A lot of the MerCruiser I/Os have slave solenoids. i.e when you turn the ign key on the MerCruiser, a slave solenoid on the top front of the motor will close, directing heavy current to the Starter Solenoid, to crank the engine.

Re: solenoid question

I saw dons thread on troubleshooting no start on motor a solenoid test on slave solenoid, do you check starter solenoid the same way?

Re: solenoid question

Just connect a small jumper wire from red battery cable on solenoid to small yellow terminal on solenoid. If starter activates, solenoid is good.
An '86 Merc will have a full wave rectifier and a stator to charge the battery. The stator will provide abot 9A of AC voltage to the rectifier. The rectifier will convert it to DC and provide it to the battery. The load of the battery acts as a voltage limiter, protecting the rectifier from damage.
